Cell Phone Hazard

United States

It just happened again; we were almost killed by a negligent driver who was too involved in her cell phone call to remember she was driving. I had just stopped at a four way stop, yielded to the car coming from the opposite direction who was turning and started into the intersection. This cow with her cell phone glued to her ear blew through the stop sign, never stopped, never even slowed down. She drove off never knowing she had almost wiped out me or the car in the lane next to me who had also started into the intersection. Does anyone else think drivers should not be allowed to use cell phones?

I personally wish they would make it so that people have to use a hands free one. I don't have a problem with them using a cell phone but so long as their hands are free. I've seen so many with them holding the phone in one hand, trying to eat or drink in the other and steering with their knee. If it's that important to talk on the phone pull over. If you have a hands free one, fine and dandy. Then it's just like talking with someone beside you. You have your hands free and don't have to worry about dropping it. I wish my area would get that but of course even if they do they have to enforce it. I doubt they would either because there are so many traffic laws here they don't enforce already so they probably wouldn't bother.

Thanks for the clarification cause MY grandbabies (your children) are the sweetest, most adorable, best behaved children on earth. I take back the raspberries.

Hand held cell phones should be banned from use while driving. I've had close calls {no pun intended] like yours also. In Canada it's supposed to be both hands on the wheel but this infraction is never enforced.

I believe that is the law here too, both hands on the wheel and at least one ear not covered. But that doesn't stop people from driving with their knees -- both hands full of fast food, make up, etc -- and having a headset plugged into both ears.

That is scary and a close call! My sister had some lady drop her phone on the floor (while driving) and the person bent down to get it while driving, nearly smashing into my sister. When they pulled up to the next light the woman actually had the nerve to say sorry, I was picking up my dropped cell phone! I don't think that most people can drive and talk on the cell phone without causing a hazard to others on the road. It's illegal here but that doesn't stop people

I hate people making phone calls while driving. It's a very bad habit and very dangerous one also. I guess it now a time for a legistlation to be passed concerning making phone call while driving.

I to have heard of this. Sometimes when I call my mother she will be driving either my sister if she is with her will pick up or my mom will say hold on a sec let me pull over. Or she will say I can't really talk right now let me call you right back. :)

Most times I do not answer my phone, unless I recognize the ringtone I have set for certain people. In which I will answer on speakerphone unless I am uncomfortable to do so. Right now, there is no imposed federal law in the US that states a ban of using cell phones while driving, but it is encforced and passed in certain states - NV not being one of them. There are some very neglectful drivers, one of them hit me last March on the way home with my daughter in the car. She just blew off the fact that she had a red left arrow, in which I had a green right away. Sure enough, she blows it and I end up hitting her rear corner of the passenger side. She was yapping on her cell and tried to tell the officer otherwise. Her stupid mother then states "She claims the other lady ran a red light while on the phone with me" Way to go Mom of the Year. The little 18 year old finaly admitted she was yapping on the phone and didn't know whether the light was red, yellow, or green. Yet, I was still 20% at fault despite her admitting to not knowing the color of the light because of where I hit her. Well, sorry, when someone is hitting 45+ making a turn and I am just starting to drive out into an intersection - someone is about to hit a 180!
