If you are a creationalist (ie-you belive god made the world in 7 days, etc), the chicken came first.
If you belive in evolution, then the egg came first because genetic mutations happen between generations. The first birds were actaully reptiles that had offspring that became more and more bird-like over generations. So, the egg that the first identifable "chicken" came out of would have been laid by something slightly less chicken-like and more reptilian, that we would not identify as a chicken.

Does it really matter? It's not like knowing is going to make our lives any more important. But I say hen. God created animals, not eggs...chickens are so stupid anyways, why don't we focus on a more intelligent animal?

I'm gonna say the chicken, because when God created everything I believe he created the chicken, not the egg.
