My favorite song from A.R. Rahman is "Margazhi Poove" from the 1994 film "May Madham" starring Vineeth and Sonali Kulkarni. Sung beautifully by Shobha (where is she now???) and set to perfect tune by Rahman, this is vintage Rahman at his absoulte best.
