Wars on MyLot?

Ireland
January 2, 2007 6:45am CST
I'm not referring to little disputes over smoking or drinking. I'm referring to those users with upsetting images in their profile who continue to post on the same political topics all the time, thus fuelling peoples' anger. I think we all need to remember that there are people from all walks of life here and that we should respect them all and not demean them. It upsets me to see that, even here on the net, we can't escape the wars that go on in real life.

tell me about it i am getting sick of it, people who are so narrow minded that all they see is there own point of view. I am sick of seeing america is bad saddam is good posts, i think really these people should start to get reported to mylot or there is going to be a massive devide on here. Another thing which is anoying me is the amount of spammers and people who copy and paste everything on mylot. Great post + rating. P.S i know you will sort them out your not shy lol.

Yeah really this Saddam posts lot of people started. It seems they're not seeing the old topics similar to their idea before posting here!

Oh my goodness, me too. I made that post about stop generalizing all Americans, but I'm still seeing posts about if they should forgive America, blah blah blah...it's getting really tiring and repetitive.

You pick best responses in less then a day! Now there is a reason to get upset with each other. Wait for more people to have a chance to respond! We got six billion people on this planet, give some more of us a chance to get our two cents in before you go and pick who has the best thing to say about your conversation!

I haven't been long with myLot and I am still to witness any of those 'wars' you refer to. It is indeed sad to see narrow-mindedness here as well as in real life. I suppose that it can get even worse on the Internet, as people all to often take advantage of being safely sat behind their computer screen. My philosophy is quite simple: I behave here like I do in real life, and I wouldn't post any message saying things I wouldn't say to someone face-to-face.

That is a very good philosophy. Actually, people just gotta be real here, that is, behave as they would in the physical world. I once met a young lady online. Via Yahoo IM she was quite talkative and quite knowledgeable on topical issues, that I always enjoyed chatting with her first thing I turned on my office PC. We arranged to meet after a3-month online amity. Boy, was I disappointed to be with this coy, somewhat intellectually deficient young lady that we spent the whole evening just drinking. She was not as sharp on the topics as she seemed on YIM!

I have been on mylot for quite some time but i don't think there are any major disputes over here. yes there are little disputes and arguments over somking and drinking. and people voicing their political opinions, some i might say too strongly but i think in a discussion forum like mylot we should encourage healthy debate. I feel more upsetting are the spammers here on mylot and copy pasters who have guts to just copy and paste anybody reply, discussion as their own and nothing is done about it. that is blatant cheating. and should be reported and these psammers should be done away with to improve the quality of discussion on mylot forum. I agree with your sentiments that we should voice our opinions in way not hurt other people's feeling like labelling all americans as bad, or why saddam was hanged or generalising all of india protesting Saddam exectution . give me a break i am also an indian and i know what a brutal dictator he was and killed his own people. And most indians including muslims didn't like him. I think repetitive posts on the same topic is also irritating and should be done away with. as you don't know if yu reply to them and they might get deleted.

I suppose one wouldn't mind a person voicing their opinions strongly, permitted, of course, that they allow for differing opinions. It's when you see that person posting topic after topic, and all about the same thing. It's like they're thinking if they bombard us enough times with their thinking that we'll finally give in and accept that they're right. It's very.....radical. I agree with you about the repetitive posts, but I think this only relates to those that are copied and pasted. We're all bound to discuss similar things at some stage or another.

Bitty you're too funny...refresh the screen...lol. Oh yea that'll work then they will have multiplied byt the time it refreshes and there will be 2 more discussions just like it. I think alot of the time people do this just to get a rise out of people.. hey they get alot of responses that way. Not from me however. I just responded to a different discussion and said "let them have it" but now I am thinking about, it why further their discussion. So now I won't bother with it myself. So refresh and move on ....lol

Well this is a free for all site, so I guess users can post whatever discussions they want as long as it conforms with mylot guidelines. I agree with you that we should not demean anybody; were a community here so we should respect each other. We can always have a good discussion without creating tension or go to the extent of demeaning anybody. I'm just not quite sure who the user your refering to. Anyway, I'll surely find out who this user is.

You are so right. I may have already responded to this discussion, but seeing it again, made me think. We've simply got to stop the cycle of blame. It all starts at home. Peace, I like your icon, and your views by the way. I've been one of those arguing in the politics and such, and i"ve realized how much of a waste of time and a denial of Love it is. No one is to blame. It's life. We all are. That's it. We're all constructing this world as we go. Hopefully, we can begin to do better.

Thanks for that reply David. You're right about it starting at home. If we can all just be "nice" for want of a better word, to those close to us it will make the world a much better place.

Hi! You are so right! I have reported one user who continually posts offensive content he cuts and pastes from other websites, but Mylot doesn't do anything about him. He never posts any original content. I've had to bow out of discussions I care about because of the verbal abuse that people heap on you here. One guy even told me to go kill myself because I have a different opinion. Can you believe that? Guess we should stick to "what color eyes do you have?" if we want to avoid the hatemongers.
• Ireland

LOL! Ok, maybe the ones who post discussions about eye colour, and ask for definitions for words like tv and mobile phones are the sensible ones. :)

No I love on-line wars, they are soo funny. It is funny to see people get worked up and yell back and forth at people over the internet. It makes me wonder how tough the people behind the keyboards really are. It is easy to be a bad-a$$ when there is no possible backlash that can take place. LOL Let the wars continue. I need some entertainment.

Ah yes, but that's why I said in my post I'm not talking about the "fun" wars that erupt over the smoking, drinking, should I let my kids watch tv. At the end of the day that can be a bit of a laugh. I've made friends here with people who I've disagreed with. But what is perturbing is those people who like to carry their radical beliefs in religion and politics onto an online forum and ram them down peoples' necks. I think that doing that can cause hatred among people. I will be steering well clear of their discussions though.

Its unsettling for me too, to see what some people type in their discussions. There is a degree of hate and evilness that just does not suit me, and I suppose if you look at the guidelines, will not be tolerated by MyLot. I hate to see people lashing out to each other, saying mean things about other peoples religion and culture. No matter what kind of topic you start about people or worthy news articles, you will always find a tone of judgement in almost all of them. I guess we have to deal with that, because we cannot really control what people will post!

Yeah, it's just reminded me that one thing that gets to me is when I see a poster telling another that they're "stupid". Why? Just because that person doesn't like what they say? In my opinion, if you have to resort to calling another person stupid, then you've lost the argument.

I simply scroll by at great speed .. I am not really interested in the kind of one sided politics that some folks seem to feel is the only right way .. no matter how good the politics there is always some bad ... and listening to others can help change the bad bits to good bits .. but generally that's wjhat wrong with this world .. everyone is trying to shout I'M RIGHT the loudest and no one is listening

I think that the mini wars going on in mylot are healthy. I have read some of the heated discussions in mylot and I dont see flaming nor bashing so I see it as an exchange of ideas rather than wars.

Well, it's just that some people are myopic in their thinking. They just can't see beyound their nose. Maybe all they need is someone to advise them and tutored them on the proper way of making comments in public forum like this.

People have very different world-views and passions. We are taught to respect everyone elses opinion, but what do you do in a scenario where someones world view is the exact opposite of yours? My take is that I can love and serve anyone no matter what their world-view, but I cannot embrace every world-view. That is... I don't have to agree with your views and ideas to be a good neighbor and care. And if I have a strong belief (political, religious, or whatever)... I realize that I will be called narrow-minded no matter how much I love and care for those who are different. Narrow-mindedness is another way of saying someone has strong convictions. Just a thought.

Hmmm.........I'm not sure actually. Maybe that's another debate - the differences between narrow-mindedness and convictions. It's a good one.

I think that people get so wrapped up in keeping the sparks going that they forget that there is a feeling human on the other end reading and sometimes taking things to heart. It's nice to see some people taking step back and realizing exactly what is going on.

I said I'm not a Christian in another of your posts. But, nonetheless, I feel something sentimental here, and I know by reading this post, that surely you walk with Christ, and you, are indeed, a child of God. Dominus vobiscum.
