In some talk to your land lord, you may find THEY are responsible for the problem and have to deal with it, it is a real health issue and they can cause fire by chewing wires. Lay traps, poison or buy a sound emitter made by Black and Decker which you plug in and the sound chases them off, it's too high pitched for humans or other animals like cats/dogs to hear. It also keeps spiders away, handy !

I don't often have mice troubles(thinking it is a possibility at the moment - thought I saw a bit of evidence). However, when I do, I put rat/mouse poison behind the appliances or under the drawer at the bottom of the oven. When we had drop ceilings, we put it up in the ceilings too if we heard them running around up there. That seemed to do the trick for us. When we set traps, we only use peanut butter also. We only have ever trapped in the basement though. As awful as mice can be, be thankful if you don't have rats. We only had a problem with them in the house once. That was the worst in having and getting rid of them. Just awful. We inadvertantly had given them shelter in the garden one year and left them homeless when we tore up the black plastic and garden refuse. Apparently then, one or two took up residence in our house. My mother used to bait the traps with peanut butter then sprinkle flour over that. The first night usually the mouse would come and the second night the mouse would inevitably get caught. You can see the tracks in the flour the first night, so you know they are interested. Good luck!

After I first got married and moved to my husbands ranch their were mice in the house. I went into the little general store and bought all ten mouse traps in stock. An old gentleman behind me was chuckling to himself and then he asked me if I had a trappers licence. Ha Ha Ha I thought to myself.
I have the situation in hand now but I will never forget the pitter patter of little feet running across the attic floor above my head while I was trying to sleep. Yuck
Traps with peanut butter work well, and I don't suppose you can have a cat if you live in an apartment.
I chase the landlord with a broom untill he got rid of them
