Haha, are you trying to spark a mad discussion? I hope you would agree that you can't quanitify one country as being 'better' or 'best.' They both have a lot of great things. Let's see, off the top of my head:
CHINA
Pros: Everything is mad cheap, the people can be much more open than Japanese, their education system is a bit better, they certainly take English language education a lot more seriously (big deal for me, as an ESL teacher), more open to other cultures and societies, more interconnected with the rest of Asia...
Cons: Shocking lack of human rights, perpetuating infanticide... those are the really big ones for me. Other than that, hmm, huge imbalances between the east and west and the distribution of wealth, overbearing policy in regards to Taiwan and Tibet, et cetera...
Japan:
Pros: Crazy culture, rather high standard of life in most the country, unlike China; mostly a safe country (except for freak murders and the like), ridiculously easy to get an English teaching job (unfortunately, though, because standards are too low).. err, I know there must be more. Green tea and onsens? :D
Cons: Society collapsing from the inside, blatant racism, which they have called out on, by the UN; frustrating insular attitudes, sometimes show a lack of diplomacy toward other Asian nations, et cetera...
I haven't summed it up very well, but I wouldn't say that either is substantially better than the other. I would say that they are two very different countries, despite the huge cultural influence China had on Japan long ago. Personally, I spend more time in Japan and wouldn't see living in China longterm - but that's also because I speak Japanese, have a Japanese husband, et cetera...

for me, i preffer japan, becouse it has both technology and culture tourism.
you can go for temples, castles, and even edo village (village imitate of Tokyo Feodal Period), and so many beautiful scenery there.
you can also go to disneyland, tokyo tower, giant stadium, etc.
and also about the girls :D

and i read from a poll that Nearly two-thirds of Japanese people believe the nation should be more patriotic although an overwhelming majority attach importance to remembering the country's past aggression.i am totally agree with them

China's Economy is much more stronger than Japan's. Japan has come through real tough recessionary period and risks to downside still remain. Japan's interest rates are just 0.25%, leaving the currency extremely weak. In short I have to go for China.

humm... i Think now a days China is getteing better day by day as comapred to Japan and its already captured the market.
The products of China is made for a short term basis and its very wel cheaper than Japan Products.
so this is best for 3rd World people :)

As previously said, a lot of Japanese culture comes from China. What is authentic however is their religion. Shinto comes from nature and buddhism didn't come until much later.
I think both countries deserve a detour. Personally, I'm very interested in both, but if it came to having to live in either, I'd choose China. Probably because it's now 75% sure I'll spend a year in Japan.
I'm much more interested in discovering China, which is currently going through a phase of constant change. That has got to be very interesting to witness.

both are great countries.
only for the past century, Japan had been better.
japanese culture is the sub-culture of China.

Both are beautiful countries but if I have to choose between the two...I'll definetely choose Japan. I love the culture and the people. Well I'm really fascinated with there anime, it's really cool. I've been watching anime since I was a child and I always wanted to be in Japan to see where do they really get their inspiration.

Both are amazing! I'm studying both languages, so I want to go to both really badly. But if I had to choose, I'd have to say China. It's just a lot bigger, so there's more to see! It sounds flippant, but serioulsy, China is huge, and if you go there you can see everything, from desert to tropics to mountains, huge modern cities and tiny villages, pandas and high culture, a booming economy coupled with extreme interior poverty, lots of different languages and cuisines.... It's just so vast. Also, traveling in China is really, really cheap.
Japan has its own draws, of course--the pop culture and electronics alone recommend it--but if I had to choose, well....

I would prefer Japan. I think they have far more advance technology than that of China. Their inventions are very fascinating. Chinese firms are still not globally competitive. Chinese firms are not the firms that are competing with the Koreans and Japanese and Americans, they may eventually.. but not yet.

japan have the most advanced technology than china, Japanesse engineers are so innovative but as of china's industry they are good at labors stuff because of their massive population. Here in philippines some of the stuff are made in china.
