Homesick

I've been feeling homesick for quite a while, missing my family, friends, and career I enjoyed
previously. Now I read that homesickness is a real illness, and can be quite serious.
Written in a pediatric journal, the article focuses on homesickness of those young people who leave
home for the first time. Well, I'm no kid, and I'm homesick. Have you ever been homesick?
What helped? How'd you get over it?

Wow that is quite interesting that they have now classified it as an actual illness. But I have to say that I am still homesick from where I was raised even now as an adult after having lived here for years - I still don't really like it here but looks like we will be here for a long time so I have just tried finding ways to supplement my homesickness - such as trying to catch up with an old friend or any family that still live there - it's really hard trying to continue on with the usual daily life - but hey what are you going to do - it has to go on. I also find that by seeing pictures from places where I have been back home as well as how things have changed since we left. I think I will always consider it being home again even if I don't live there anymore. Hope you find something that will help you deal with feeling like this!!! It sure can be rough at times. And yes I am hoping for a trip back home sometime this year!!!

When my daughter was born ill I became VERY homesick. I wanted my dad nearby more than anything. I live 3 states away from where I grew up, so almost everyone I grew up with are far away.
But focusing on my daughters healthcare & starting a blog on my Window's Live Space & my Myspace on her accomplishments & staying in touch over the phone with those who matter most to me helped a lot. i also write letters to my dad.

I got homesick when I was young, about the age of seven. Also when I was in college for I was alone, far from the family and habitat. I did many things; I was hard up to overcome it. I went to the chapel in the University ground (University of the Philippines, Diliman) every day when there were no people about midday, I joined school organizations, I worked as student assistant. I could not study and I failed in some subjects. I had so many problems, I couldn't adjust. But I had to face realities and I was growing old so the feeling of homesickness was finally gone but I was really so hard up to get away from it.

I was really homesick when I went away to college. I missed everyone in my home town and especially my family. Funny thing is that I now call that college town my home. I don't know what I did to overcome the homesickness, it just gradually went away.

Well I was talking to an old friend the other day who moved away a few years ago. As we talked she was asking what so and so was up to and what ever happened to this other so and so ... towards the end of the conversation she thanked me and I didn't understand why. Then she said she had been feeling really homesick before we talked and after hearing all the old drama she was perfectly content to stay put. I thought it was hilarious

I understand why old dramas make it easier to stay put...I spoke to a friend day before yesterday, to catch up on old news, but I'm still homesick...

I can certainly relate to being homesick as when I went to Florida for college that is how I was for the first couple of months while I was gone. I felt nervous a lot and scared and my stomach would be upset. I was anxious and did not know what to do so I would call my parents everyday to make me feel better and their words of encouragement helped me get over being homesick. Plus I went home every school break that we had.

I'd been living out for almost a year and the feeling come and go frequently in the first few months. I think it's good to keep yourself occupied with works or hobbies to divert your attention to other activities instead of your sweet home. It'll take a while to get used to the 'emptiness' in you. Hope you have a better method to cure your homesickness

we have an addiction in the modern world for putting things in boxes and explaining them medically. This means that we are no longer busy, we are stressed, we are not under the weather, we have a condition. Homesickness is just that, you miss the things you have left behind when you aren't thinking about the things you have gained. By calling it an illness your mind builds it into more than it is. It is just a natural human reaction. Admitting it is good but over analysing can cause problems.

I have been away from my homeland for years now. Oh, sometimes I wonder how it all happened! If you, too, were blessed to have been raised in a loving, nice and civil environment, I can honestly tell you that, there is no place like home. It is not possible to get over been away from home; unless, of course, if one was in an abusive situation. I, on the other hand, often use the good memories to keep going, regardless of life's problems.

well yes homesickness can be really an illness.i mean anything that is depressing can cause serious stress and make you ill.i think you should remain in constant touch with your family, friends and close person over the phone or internet.and also try to make new friends at the new place and try going out more and socialise more.that would make you less homesick.

yes definitely this is a major problem for most of us staying away from home.but there are ways to overcome it.i must tell you some tips that i have emplyed in my reallife to overcome this problem.
1.dont be alone ever.this will eat you up.whenever you are alone watch tv,talk on phone,or simply sleep.
2.make a lot of friends who will give you company.
3.dont drink or smoke as they are depressants.take tea coffee.
4.talk with your family everyday.dont miss them.whenever you miss them give them a call and talk heart out to them.
5.engage yourself more in your present job and try to find interest in it.
6.do breathing exercises.
i think these tips will definitely help you.thanks
