Try writting a blog in niche you have expertise. Focus on the commonly search keywords or phrases for your blog. soon you will see that your blog is indexed by search engines and they are sending free and targeted traffic to your blog. As you know "content is king". use unique content for you blog or website.
best of luck

Write something interesting at the end of the day, become actively involved in the support of other blogs, once you create a 'solid' network of people you know and who know you, word will increase.

Consider your content is number one! If you are on a regular subject matter do intense amount of research and when you are on message boards of similar nature and "x" topic comes up alway refer and footnote your website as a source.
Consider your own use of other blogs and how you find them and number one why do you visit other blogs?
