Have any of you had to deal with major depression?

In 1983, my father attempted suicide by shooting himself in the head with a .22 rifle. The doctor was able to save his life, however, he lived the next 13 years in a vegetative state, before he died in 1996.
In addition, my mother, who has suffered from a mental challenge all her life, now has alheimzer's disease.
Needless to say, 1983 was the beginning of a long period of major depression for me. I dealt with it alone with no help for about 20 years, because I had no health insurance and was very low on income (as a result of the depression). In 2003, I was finally able to get help, thanks to my dauther, and am now on Social Security Disability, have medical insurance (Medicaid, Medicare, and Blue Cross), and live in a new apartment with new furniture (provided to me by a charity called Outreach.
Have any of you suffered from this horrible disease, or know someone who is dealing with it.
Perhaps I can give some guidance, based on my own experiences.

I did suffer this kind of depression wherein I want to take my life because I was not happy with how things are going with my life...having chosen wrongly in marrying young..but my kids brighten my eyes and they're the only comfort I get to battle my depressions in life...and without them life is just a waste...

I have dealt with something called bipolar. At first doctors where diagnosing me with depression. I live in Canada and I think we forget sometimes we are lucky to have the health care system we have. I am sorry you had to deal with it so long on your own. Just in case you don't know bipolar is an illness were you get depressive states as well as manic (highs) states. I have been off work since March of last year and my doctor doesn't know if I will work again. I am 42 and have worked since I was 17 when I joined the miltary. I work for the goverment now and I don't like my job which contributes to my depression. Sometimes I feel like I am fighting a losing battle making my kids understand bipolar. They see me and think I look fine but inside sometimes i am in so much turmoil I could cry. For the most part my meds keep me stable but sometimes I still suffer the highs and lows. My parents are alive but my dad has some mental challenges. He takes antidepressants. I am happy to see that after so many years you were able to get help. Right now I am sliding into a depressive state. In the last 5 years, I have been hosipitalized 4 times in March. My doctor is going to work with my mood stabilizers to help prevent this. I would love to talk to you in the future and can I add you to my friends list.

I've suffered from Dysthymia since I was 9 or 10 years old, and suffered two what they call 'double depressions', where I was suffering from Dysthymia as well as major depression. I've never really experienced great joy in life, as ever just everyday things are marred by the Dysthymia. It makes my life limbo; it's not good, it isn't bad enough to be horrible, it's just... inbetween.
It's brought on other problems, particularly with eating and eating disorders. I'm slowly trying to claw my way out, but it's so very hard to take even a single step in the right direction.

I have never heard of Dysthymia! How could you have an eating disorder at the age of 9 or 10?

Yes, I am also suffering a serious depression right now. I have been trying to fight it but didn't succeed to do it. I refuse to go for treatment because 1. I didn't feel loved by anyone and my husband never cared about getting help for me, so I guess I may just let my life be like this forever.
2. I don't have an income for myself because I was not able to work. I had tried to work but it always lasted for 6 months, and then I will quit. I was a graduate in Human Resource Management, were the best student from my diploma course, Executive Secretaryship. But now I can't meet people because I feel deeply hurt by the way they talk to me. I really want to do something valuable in my life so that my life would not be a waste, but how am going to do it if I can't get along with people? If you happen to have some online jobs for me, maybe you could use my help. Please help me, but please don't recommend me to go for medical check-up. The first thing I need now is somebody who understands my situation. I need it very badly. Thank you.

You are very sweet, but the last thing I need is pity. Please if you every know anyone who is suffering from depression, offer your help....they don't need your pity.
A lot of people are too proud to ask for help, and are insulted with obvious pity from someone. They realize that someone who offers pity, obviously does not understand what they are going through. Empathy is another matter, and it certainly works well in aiding people who are under the throes of depression.

I have dealt with depression every now and then. But I haven't had major depression. I do believe it is hereditary. If someone if your family suffers from it, there is a good chance you might as well. I'm glad that you got the help that you needed. It's really terrible nowadays that if you cannot afford health insurance, there is no place for you to go to deal with your mental issues for free. Good luck. I hope you continue to do well.

Thank you so very much for your kind comments. You are so right, everyone needs health insurance to get well again. What finally happened to me was that my daughter acknowledged the seriousness of my illness and guided me in the right direction.
For those of you who are unaware...if you live in the United States, and hopefully, most countries have a similar public service, go to the nearest Social Services office in the nearest available city. There, they will sign you up for Medicaid. The next step is find a mental health program such as an Outreach program and they will assist you in getting the rest of the help you need. Ask friends, anyone you know, or look in the phonebook for mental care assistance. The name of the place I hooked with was Lakeview Mental Health, here in New York, for an example. Outreach, a great charity, was funding them.
They guided me in the right direction to everything else I needed to get the care I needed, and were with me every step of the way until I recovered and am now on my own two feet again. They are wonderful, caring people.

Hope you come out of depression as soon as possible. I have experienced severe depression & my condition was really bad. Always there was smile on my face which was hiding many dark things inside. At your age only it seemed like I have seen 99% of the world. I don't like discussing about it now because it took lots of effort to come out of depression.

My mum was bi-polar and abused me for my growing up I was sexually, physicaly nad mentally abused, when i was 14 i got diagnosed with manic depression, I have never taken medication and am ok now, I have things that i tell myself when i feel low that help sget me through, but I am very appreciative for the life I have now coz that was my own doing and I worked hard to get here, maybe if you can gain a sense of achievement it will hlp you to be more stable, but you have to remember thet life always has ups and downs and if you focus more on the ups the downs seem less

The entire time I was raising my daughter, I reminded her that even though today seems like the end of the world, things do change. Look for to tomorrow, for better times are ahead.

I really do hope you can get out of your financial woes soon. I wish you the best. I do not have any advice for you because fortunately I have never experienced what you have. However I would tell you to always have faith in God.

I have already conquered my financial woes...I am not getting rich, by any means, but I do have enough income now to keep me going.
Faith in God is definitely helpful.

I don't know that whter this is depression or not but my story goes like this.
I am a Software graduate, not having any job from the time i had passed out from college I am looking for a job its around two years now.
I have worked here and there but not get a satisfying job so I kept on left the jobs. Now I am in state where I find myself no more interested even in applying for the jobs and not I am not also studying, I am in deep confusion and I don't know what would happen in life with me, would I be able to find a good job. I wanted to do so much in my life but now I am finding myself in such a loop hole from where I am not able to come out. Should i change the place where I live, My friends who knew nothingabout the subjects while in college and whom I taught many many times are doing very good jobs.
I don't know whether you are getting my point or not, but my problem is this that after being a good student I am not able to find job and when I was unable to find a job I lost interest in job, but i want to do a job but I am not doing any efforts for it now. what should i do.

One thing I have learned though my dark clouds, is everyone needs so much support during depression. I believe I have a fairly high IQ, I have excelled in everything job-wise I have ever attempted.
Intelligent people, such as yourself, also can succumb to depression. Chin up, keep trying, just never give up. The first thing you need to do is find a good doctor who can diagnose you properly, and get you the help you need. It can be done.
Everyday, repeat to yourself...I am worth it, I can and will overcome this. Put a smile on your face and go out and face the job you have to do. Set up as many job seeking appointments as you can and do it!
It will happen, but not unless you give it your most and try!
God bless and good luck!

Yes, I believe, if everyone would admit it, most people have had to deal with depression of some sort from time to time.
Please, I do hope you are getting the care you need.

I suffered from major depression back in 2002 and had to be impatient and outpatient at a hospital here several times in a short period of time. I felt really down and that things would not get better and felt like the world would be a better place without me. I had all sorts of thoughts going through my head and wanted to die but never could make an attempt at it. Some of it was due to the stress and anxiety from my previous jobs and part of it was due to having a bad childhood. I was on all sorts of medicatons til they found the right ones for me. Fortunately, after getting treatment and changing jobs, I am all better now and do not even have to take medications anymore. I am back to being happy again and do not have thoughts about wanting to die.

You are so right! Even a lost love can bring on symptoms of the illness. It equates to the same thing as someone close to us dying.

I've dealt with Clinical Depression for a number of years, now. It's not something to really be proud of, but being able to control this every single day is. Most people don't understand how hard it can be trying to fight the urge to just end life, or hide away forever. Everyone thinks it's so easy to not fall not this "trap." Nobody even thinks its really a problem until they have to deal with it up close and personal.
