How does another persons rating go up when you respond?

Yesterday night (2.1.07) I was responding to the discussions by user "alokvasanth" and everytime I responded his rating went up by 1. He was not online to increase the rating, but I have not noticed anything like this before. In fact his rating shot up from 223 to 263 with my responses. Can anyone explain how this happens.
