I was diagnosed with a anxiety disorder in 1999 what i really have not figured out why so many people call it a mental disorder?and why so many people jump to the conclusion that because you have a mental disorder you must be crazy?what is your opion.and do you think this is right for people to label us as being crazy?

Anxiety is overloading the mind with multiple thoughts or pressures, that the mind or brain cannot able to withstand..so we burst out in anxiety and tension.

Hey to all the happy crazy people!!! worry more if they label you normal because then you know you are lost.
If my 2 cents mean anything they should be called emotion disorders, behavior disorders or the big medical one Cognitive disorders.
I am bipolar type 1 with frills added, PTSD, OCD anxiety and panic issues. So i have the papers that say I am a certified nut. But with the right meds and the proper cognitive therapy I have worked very hard and come very far then the person i was when i was first diagnosed. Some ppl can do it without meds and without doctors I couldnt and cant I will be on the meds my entire life but its worth the cost to be able to communicate with the entire world not just the people who learned how to deal with me by being around me.
I have done my time curled up in corners crying horrendously while trying to get the pictures out of my head. I have gone on a 4 day manic where i cant eat or sleep or even go to the bathroom. I have been so down that all i wanted to do was die so i could get some rest and stop having to fight to stay sane. It can be done. for me i needed a support circle of friends and doctors and the meds.
And those that label us crazy are just jealous that they arnt getting the attention and they are scared that in truth they are the crazy ones and we are the normal ones..then again...it could be true :)

They categorize the disorder because it isn't physical. People are quick to label you as crazy when they hear you have a mental disorder. Those who do not suffer from any mental ailments do not understand. Thanks for posting this discussion. I hope this enlightens people on the subject. Huggers!

.......people will 1st hand think of you as "crazy", as laymen term, but medicaly its an anxiety disorder. you cant prevent people to judge you, they can label you all they want thats the world we have, but some individuals will understand your condition.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder and other anxiety disorders are listed in the DSM-IV, which is a guide to the diagnosis of mental disorders in the U.S., so technically they are a psychological disorder yet they can also have underlying physiological contributors.
But for someone to come to the conclusion that a person with anxiety disorder (or any mental disorder for that reason) is "crazy" shows that they are either ignorant about this subject or very callous.
The best way to remedy ignorance shown toward anxiety disorders is through education. So if anyone ever makes statements to you about anxiety that are untrue then let them know the true facts about it. :)

Ahh come and join my boat maybe we can row together! lol
well i must say everything you said is exactly how it is,with it being called a mental disorder it is because it's to do with parts of the brain not functioning properly, ie...chemical imbalance. thus to why it is called a mental disorder. Now the people that call others with mental disoders Crazy are just plain ignarent, not one person i know with a mental disorder is crazy, they all function like us, have feelings like us, just that they get sick. It may not be the common cold but everyone should have there right to feel sick every now and again. we accept the common cold why cant we accept anxiety? No mental disorder should be labled as crazy. but thats what society does. i have a little saying when people say that to me ...always remember "Im not crazy. my reality is a little different than yours" lol lol lol well you have to find some happienss in something!

I was diagnosed for years as being bi-polar and recently found out that beyond a shadow of a doubt its P.T.S.D (post traumatic stress disorder). Which means I have flashbacks. I am far from being crazy. I run a house with 4 kids (well, 5 if you count my husband), watch the finance's and pick up the piece's everytime someone need's me to, (part of the problem).
People that say things like that you just need to ignore. They are usually people that either have nothing better to do, are just mean, ignorant, or have something to gain from it (like a "counselor")or sometimes (not often) they just care too much and need to be educated as to what the terms mean. I will tell you what I did after years of listening to my mother say things like the "R" word. I started getting pamphlets and leaving them in her house cause she would not listen to my explanations. People are generally nosy and this is a very good method to help them understand.
I hope this helps you.

I just typed a long reply & it completely vanished? How annoying :(
Anyhow, you're not crazy at all, so many people suffer from similar problems all over the world. & calling you crazy just creates a stigma & only makes the problem worse for people.
Believe me, you're totally normal & not alone. Many anxiety issues are actually physical, caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, that in itself is proof that it is nothing to do with being crazy :)
