How do you help an alcoholic?

I don't know what to do anymore...my best friend (who is a guy) is an alcoholic. I have tried to talk to him about it, he agrees that he has a problem and that he is going to change, but he hasn't. His reason is that he has a very addictive personality. There are times when he will go for a week or so without having a drink, but once he does he doesn't seem to stop. Sometimes he will go on binges for 2 or 3 days. Once he starts drinking he doesn't know how to pace himself and just lets it get out of control. I don't know what to do...I love him as a friend, and I know that he is a good person with a bad habit. Any advice??
