Adderall isnt a narcotic, it's an amphetamine meaning it's more like caffeine
I've known people to take it and it's done wonderful things for them, although they were adults. I'd be concerned about giving this to a child unless everything else failed... Sometimes a child's diet can affect ADHD or give off similar symptoms. How old is the child taking this?

I have taken adderall before, although I do not have a prescription. Many of my friends take it, and they have done a lot better in school since they started using it. In my experience, it can only be abused if you open up the capsules and crush the little spheres inside. From that point, you either snort the remains or eat them. But, I would assume that your seven year old isn't doing this. I would start worring about him abusing/getting addicted to adderall once he enters his preteen years.

I was diagnosed with ADD (The same as ADHD but without the hyperactivity) as a young child. I am now 24 and for several years I had taken myself off of ADD medication. I was taking Ritalin. The reason I took myself off was my own personal self-exploration. I wanted to know what it was like without the medication as an adult. I realized without the medication I did indeed have most all the ADD symptoms and they did indeed cause a serious problem in my life. As a child I never had to really worry about it but now I was living on my own and I had to be able to focus and stay focused. Even driving was a problem, esp. driving I should say, as I could not stay focused enough to pay attention to the road. I would zone out and almost crash into other cars. But I had to see if I could deal with this on my own without medication. So, I stoped driving and started taking the bus. I did research and started performing various mental exersizes to help me, including meditation. Meditation as I became proficient at it seemed to virtually cure my problem. Then for years with what I was learing from these exersizes I was able to function.
Recently though I have gone through some changes that I can not explain. My normal practice is no longer working, and ADD is causing me to loss my job. I will be going back to the medications again to get some respite in a clear mind.
The point is though, that as someone who has gone through this for many years now. I can attest from personal experience that the medication is good, okay, and has saved my live several times.
Yes, all ADD medications are stimulants. The reason being that stimulants increase blood flow to a certain part of the brain that does not function as normal in someone with ADD/ADHD. Thus basicly restoring normal function, in theory. No one fully understands it but we know that it works.
Here do some research and what ever you do make sure that it is well thought out.
