A man standing on a NY subway platform yesterday with his two young daughters saw a fellow passenger fall onto the tracks as a train was approaching. He jumped on the tracks on kept the man and himself under the train until it passed. Not every day you hear of a person risking his life to help save the life of a total stranger. http://www.amny.com/news/local/wire/ny-bc-ny--subwayrescue0103jan03,0,6893026.story

Not everyday someone would do this in the world, but he must have had some courage as i could not jump under a train i always thought there was a metal wire under the trains which would chop you up. Good for him i hope the stranger gives him some sort of reward for his courage.

I don't think the strange can offer much for a reward; he's a 19 year old college student. But maybe his parents or grandparents can find a good way to say thank you.

Exactly and a reward is not always in the way of money it is the thought that counts, even a card to say thank you would be nice.

Maybe as people hear about this they will be more likely to look out for each other, especially if a person is being mugged or is sick. In NYC people often have a habit of passing by people in trouble and not wanting to get involved. But folks in any city or country can learn from this example, I think.

Wow! That is awesome!!! The man had enough nerve to pull and hold another while the train passed over them? That is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this article! It is so nice to read something that is so wonderful nowadays. It seems as if the media loves to tell all about the negatives and seldom report the wonderful things. It is nice to see they took interest in something that may inspire others to do good deeds. Again, thank you for sharing!!!!

Yeah, what's amazing to me is that the good samaritan has two daughters, who were standing there on the platform with him, and yet he still went ahead and did what he felt he had to do.

I am just reading this article now and find it amazing and very brave of this man to do something like that. It takes a lot of courage to go on the train tracks to save someone while the train is coming. You usually only see or hear something like this in a movie. I probably would not have done such a thing due to the risk. Hopefully he got some kind of reward for bravery.

He was recognized by NYCity and given a medal; the film school that the saved man is a student at offered to give free tuition to his daughters; and Donald Trump supposedly offered him $10,000 or something like that. And he's been on Letterman, etc., as well as being Pres.Bush's guest at the State of the Union message.

This really was an inspiring story when I heard about it. Then a few days later, 2 men caught a baby that fell off a fire escapte in NYC. I think we should focus more on news stories like this and less on violent, negative stories. These are true modern-day heroes.

Yes, there's so much bad news going on that it tends to drown out everything else. Good news only tends to get mentioned when it's something really remarkable and spectacular, like these two stories. The 'subway samaritan' was recognized by Pres. Bush at the State of the Union address, I was glad to see that.

And the guy seems so genuinely modest about what he did... like it was no big deal.

That's really good to hear that still there are few good people who live without selfishness and thinking of others.

Yes, and to think that he thought quickly enough to know what to do.

I heard earlier today that the City of New York has awarded him its highest award for civic achievement, an honor that has previously been given to General Douglas MacArthur and Martin Luther King. He's also been offered a free trip to Disney World and cash awards from different places.

I read this on aol news today. I think it is wonderful that this man risk his own life for that of another. There are not many people who would do this. They had a poll on aol that ask if you would do this. There were 49% of people that said they would not and 39% said maybe and 12% said they would. I don't feel that this is a decision that you could think about. I feel that it would be a reaction on instinct rather than thought.

Yes, it would be hard for a person to think through it: 'If I try to save this total stranger I may lose my own life, which would leave my two young daughters without a father.' Seems like a gut decision a person would have to make.

I hadn't heard that, that's a great perspective to have. This guy really deserves a lot of credit for his corage, quick thinking, and modest attitude toward it all.

It is so encouraging to hear such tales of bravery. You're right, it isn't every day that you hear about something as amazing as this. How wonderful of that man to risk his life to help someone that he didn't even know. Wow! Thank you for sharing this really positive news story with everyone. It is so nice to hear some positive news for a change! ^_^

Maybe some other people will hear about this and learn from his example. I'm surprised he had the presence of mind to think about what would be the right thing to do, and then to do it--should he try to help the guy up from the tracks, cover him up, etc. I hope if I'm ever in a situation like that I'll be able to think quickly and make the right choice.
