why "hello"

why does EVERYONE INITIATES THE PHONE BY SPEAKING 'HELLO'?

I don't know, "hello" just seems like the default greeting in many situations. It is the one thing you can say that will not alienate anyone. answering the phone by saying "whut up?" or "who this is?" may throw off some people.

Because it's polite to say that when you first talk to someone.
