Here's the deal. My dad all the sudden a little over a year ago started all the sudden to break out in these hives. They are real red, itch bad and become welts after awhile. He's tried to pinpoint food that's doing it but sometimes it's hours after he eats. Sometimes he's broke out after eating tomatoes then next time he can eat tomatoes but nothing happens. But usually it's hours later after he's eaten. then just hear in the past few months, he's started getting real weak and one time he almost passed out he got so sick. And this was following a huge hive break out. It was awful. He's been to the Dr. but all they did was give him medicine for hives that make him where he can't stay awake or drive while taking them. Can anybody help/ Ever heard of this, had this type of problem?? Thanx in advance!

My daughter has recently been getting these hives, that swell into welts as she itches them. The doctor called this dermagraphism or something like that. He prescribed zyrtec, an antihistamine-that doesn't keep you from being able to drive. And also elocon cream to apply to the itching areas...I'd recommend seeing an allergy doctor, as they are more specialized at finding what's causing his problem so he may eliminate this. Hope this helps.

The problem with hives is that they can be caused by a lot of things NOT just a reaction to food. Hives can be caused by things his skin comes into contact with, things he breathes and even just plain stress. Here is the URL for a blog that was written by someone with allergy problems. http://www.writingup.com/blog/ginger_yazak She not only talks about her problems, she discusses different types of treatments (he may find something that will work for him without making him drowsy). I was able to use the info she had on vitamins to fight allergies and now I just take2 vitamins once a day and one over-the-counter allergy pill once in a while instead of every day. Hope this helps!
