Is a hamster appropriated for a child (18 months)?

Hi, I have a son who is 18 months now. He really likes animals, almost all animals. Not the loud and scary ones ofcourse. When I take him to the park where they have goats and rabbits and chickens etc, he really likes it. And when I hold a cat he likes to pet. So I was thinking about getting him a pet. I love cats, but my experince is that they 'make no 1 and 2' inside the house. Plus I hate the smell of their box and having to clean that up. So I thought a hamster would be a good option. It's small and he can hold it (under supervision ofcourse), and the little drops that come out don't stink that much. What do you think?

What do you mean with running around, it in a cage? Soes it escape or do you mean the noise? Have you had a hamster. I did when I was younger me and my sister really liked it. But we did do some strange stuff though. We made the hamster jump of a high barbie house and when he didn't jump, we'd help him a little bit...

If he loves animals, maybe.. yes. I think. But he's only 18 months old and he can't wash the cage all by himself. You will need to wash the cage every week and clean the hamster's potty corner every other day. You must make sure you have the time to do so. Also, hamsters are very noisy at night. They gnaw the metal bars of the cage ( this can of course be prevented by buying an aquariam cage but it's poor air ventilation ) and run on their wheel all night. I've read one website saying that hamsters can run up to 8 miles in one night! If your son really wants to have a hamster but doesn't like the sound of the running wheel, you can oil the wheel or buy a silent wheel. Silent wheels do not make any noise at all but they cause a little bit more. Still I think you can adopt a hamster. There are many unwanted hamsters out there. You could give a hamster a great life! Happy mylotting to you!
