Gardening - need some good ideas!!

I need some new landscaping ideas! I have quite the green thumb but suck when it comes to planning an entire backyard, which is what I need to do. I have a small veggie garden area, but the rest is pretty much open right now. I want cutting flowers so I can fill my house with fresh bouquets... I don't want a "dead" period, I live in Northern California, near the Bay Area, so weather is not much of a problem. I want a small pond for water gardening and fish, I want a nice sitting area. Any suggestions on what plants I should look into would be much appreciated!!

How about planting a butterfly and hummiingbird garden? I have one and I just love watching all the visitors. You can put a nice bench nearby for great viewing. I want to add a small pond myself this year to my garden. I am not sure of what grows best in your area but these sites may help. www.cnps.org www.elkhornnursery.com

OMG I want to put in a butterfly garden so bad!! I actually first heard about it at the bhg.com website and love the idea....I also want to put in a "medicine wheel" garden as well as of course my veggie garden...I have a rather large area to work with which is good but also a downfall because its SUCH a large area to work with LOL...I'd love to have a pond as well but I dont know if we'll do that any time soon...the main thing for us is the house but I'm saving to at least get the gardens started (and the kids and I want to put a "memorial area" out in the woods as well) there are quite a few links posted in this thread that I'll definately have to check out!

You can buy gardens in a can that specifically are for cut flowers. I find this easier to use and you get a great variety of flowers when you use this.

Living in California you can grow about anything thats tropical such as elephant ears and bird of paridise and banana plants, anything that give a lush tropic look. I love that look in yards and landscapes
