why and when do cats purr?

My cat purrs when he breathes!!! He sounds so cute. He purrs like a little motor boat, all the time.

I have 2 cats and both purrs only when they want food or love :-S

I feel that cats purr when they are happy and just want to show some affection.. I love when my cats purr. they sound so pretty.. its a conforting feeling and sound

I dont have cats but there is a lot of cats below my house and they are most of time making the sound Meow instead of purr ..i do think that they are hungry yea
