Blocking the rivers from getting into the sea.

what could happen if we human beings can manage to stop the rivers from getting into the sea?

What would be the purpose? I suppose a slight decrease in ocean volume considering the water falling on land is no longer reaching the rivers to return to the sea. Any major impact? I'm not sure.
