I don't know if I could pick just one... or even just ten. I think Billy Joel is simply amazing.
I love "Always a Woman" because I always wanted a man to think those things about me. I love "And So It Goes" because I think it is such a beautiful description of what it means to love with all of your heart. I love "I Go To Extremes" because my father is bipolar and this song seems to describe that illness to a T to me. I love "The Stranger" because... well, who doesn't love The Stranger??? I love "The Bridge" because it stirs powerful feelings in me. I love "We didn't start the fire" because it's just powerful. And that's just what comes to mind this very second. I have no doubt that I'll continue to think of others that I wish I had listed.
I have recently discovered a short CD by his daughter Alexa Ray and she is similarly talented. Or, not really similar. Her music doesn't sound like him at all, but she's very gifted, as one would expect of Billy Joel's child.
Something I have always found amazing about Billy Joel is that although his lyrics are incredibly meaningful, he writes the music of his songs first. He thinks in music and then adds the words in later. I saw him say that it in an interview and it just blew me away because his lyrics have touched me so very much through the years. Then I heard Alexa Ray Joel being interviewed by Gayle King on XM radio and she said that she writes the same way, her lyrics come after the music is done. It's incredible to me, but then I always think in words, not music, so it's just alien to me.
Can you tell that I love him?
On songs I don't care for, the only one that really comes to mind is the one about Saigon, and it's not that I don't like it really, it's just that it doesn't hit me emotionally like so many others. I think he is simply the greatest!

wow, I thought that I was the only one who felt this way about him! I had never heard about him writing the music first and then the lyrics. Just one more reason to admire him. How talented! Interesting that you had always wished a man would 'think those things about you' in reference to 'Always a Woman'...that is exactly how I feel when I hear that song! Thanks for replying!

I'm glad I'm not the only one crazy for Billy Joel. I didn't know that he wrote the music first, then wrote the lyrics. He is a wonderful storyteller with his music. I think it's an art that has been lost. Years ago, I saw him on the VH1 series "Storytellers" and I was amazed at how he could play a tune (beautifully) on the piano right off the top of his head, anything from the Beatles to classical. And to think he wouldn't have been a musical legend if his mother hadn't forced him into piano lessons!
I've often wondered about his daughter's music. What genre is it?

I've been listening to Billy for a long time and his music means a lot to me. My top favorite is Vienna, but New York State of Mind, Summer, Highland Falls, and Movin' Out are also top favorites.
As far as songs I don't like... eh... Captain Jack isn't one of my favorites. It's just weird to me.... haha.

My most favorite Billy Joel song is We Didn't Start the Fire. I just love hearing all those historical events being listed in the song. And, I think of I Go to Extremes as my theme song.
I can't think of any Billy Joel song I really don't like, although there are some I like less than others.

Yes, I love that song too! I wonder how long it took him to get that right and be able to sing it without any slips of the tongue!

Wow, this is an old discussion I am amazed when these rise up from the depths and show themselves again. I gotta say that most of Billy Joel's music is very good. I think River of Dreams is one of my favorites. Not sure that there are any I don't care for.

I've been a fan of his for a while and I like so much of his music, especially his earlier works. I think though my all time favorite is Goodbye Siagon. It just has so much meaning in there. So much emotion and it really packs a wallop. My next would be We didn't Start the Fire. That is an amazing song. Of course It's Still Rock and Roll To Me, Only The Good Die Young, and Piano Man are top ones as well. He just really knows how to do a song and make it rememberable.

Yes, his early works are awesome. My family is especially fond of a very early work, 'Rootbeer Rag.' My daughter just recently got the sheetmusic and has learned to play it on the piano. It is a very difficult piece. I LOOOOOOVE 'We Didn't Start the Fire too. Thanks for responding. Long live Billy Joel!

I love Billy Joel! I think my very favorite has to be "the Longest Time", but I can listen to anything of his. I have seen him in concert a couple of times, once with Elton John, and think it is the greatest show!

My all time favorite is Uptown Girl. Second is Piano Man. I think Billy Joel just takes you right into the songs.

I love Billy Joel. For my birthday like 2 years ago my husband took me to see hime when he was on tour with Elton John. I still think the old standby "Piano Man" is my favorite. I really like "She's got a Way" and "Big Shot" too. I guess it's hard for me to really pick one single song of his as my "favorite". LOL!

My favorite Billy Joel song has to be "She's Got a Way", which I also happen to think is the most romantic song in the world. It isn't lust or power driven, it isn't whiny or self-indulgent, it just talks about why he loves her, all the little things that make her special. I really hope that one day I find a guy who will dedicate this song to me on the radio or something.

I love Scenes in an Italian Restaurant. I wrote a short story inspired by that song. My favorite album of his is The Stranger. And of course, The Piano Man is one of my all-time favorites.
I heard he has a new release. Have you heard it yet? How does it compare to his other music?

One that speaks to me is Angry Young Man...Love the Piano riff at the beginning and the lyrics mirrors my own feelings on life and how things go.
She's always a Woman, Goodnight Saigon, Say Good Bye to Hollywood, and the ultimate sing along song for Karoke and by yourself...Piano Man

I LOVE Summer Highland Falls. The piano is great. The whole "Songs in the Attic" CD is a must-have. It's a song that you can relate to no matter who you are. It's a shame it never got the popularity of his other songs.
That would be my number one song. There would be a 50-song tie for number two.
I can't think of any song that I don't like. At one time there were songs I didn't care for but they grew on me.
