Gas pumping nigthmare!!!!!

2002 Huyndai Elantra GT, everytime I try to fill the tank I have to keep pressing on the pump's nozzle again and again, because the pump keeps shuting off, like when the tank has reach it's full capacity, but the meter has not reach a dollar yet. This can go on 20 to 30 times for the meter to reach $20. I need to know what's wrong, approx. cost, and if I can do it myself. Please help, it's embarrasing to go to the gas station with this vehicle.
