I ran out of gas...

OK, I deserved it! My husband just shakes his head when we're in my car because that light is always on that says I need more gas. I know almost to the mile how far I can go on a tank of gas, and I usualy don't get gas until I'm almost to that point. Usually, once the light comes on, I have 3 more gallons of gas, I get about 18 mpg, so to be safe, I don't go any further than 30 miles once the light comes on.
UNTIL today... I barely pulled out of my parking lot at work, headed to the gas station, and there ya go, out of gas, stuck on the side of the road. This is the first time in AGES that I have run out of gas. I had to call my son, have hime drive the half hour to where I was and bring me some gas. I know my husband was laughing at me the whole time, but I deserve it. He always puts gas in his truck when it's just past half a tank. One day I'll learn...
When do you fill up your tank? Have you ever run out of gas? Where were you? Who did you call?

I hate having to put petrol in the car. I think having to put petrol in a car is a major malfunction that car manufacturers are going to have to look at more closely. I should be able to get in the car and drive and not have to worry about silly things like petrol, oil, water, anti-freeze, lights, wipers etc.
I haven't a clue how much mileage my car does to the gallon. All I know is that when the red light shows I have 40 kilometres left. On a couple of occasions my car has spluttered into the garage, driving practically on fumes and prayers.

A funny thing... Every other time I've ran out of gas I've actually smelled the fumes. Not last night though... That's kinda strange.
Hey, maybe we need to get those battery-operated cars... I'm sure I'll be too busy to plug the darned thing in every night and then I'll really be stranded!

I was pretty close to a gas station, and I probably could have walked down and gotten my own gas. I would have had to go to another store first to buy a gas can though - we're thinking I should keep one in my car just in case...

I just want to say that I have been int he car when my wife ran out of gas. It is really embarssing. We were driving down a very busy road and the car all of a sudden would only go up to 10 miles an hour. Everyone was passing us, honking, flipping the finger. Luckily we were close to a parking lot, so we pulled into there. My folks can and got me and I went and got some gas. Good times... good times.

Yeah, I was on a pretty busy road last night, and it was at 5 o'clock when everyone was getting off work. Fortunately there was enough room for me to pull over out of the way.

You should get Triple A (if it's available where your at) they will bring you gas if you run out .. for free (with a membership of course) and your husband will never know. (:
Also helps if you lock your keys in the car!

For some unknown reason AAA HATES me. I have had so many problems with them - 3 times in one weekend even! I could go on for hours about my bad experiences with AAA. My mother pays for our memberships, but I had her cancel mine because I've had such bad experiences with them. I do have roadside assistance though the dealer that I bought the car from, but it was one of those "Push 1 if you...." and I got to about 5 before I decided it would be quicker to call my son.
And besides, we're having a good laugh over it. (Unless it happens again, might not be so funny next time)

My mom does the exact same thing, and it makes me crazy! I don't know how many times I have had to save her. Anyway, I try to keep mine at least half full. You never know what emergency will come up and you'll need to travel further than 30 miles. (I've learned from experience that when I have an emergency, I was always out of gas.)

I just have to be more willing to stop for gas when I need it. I always think "I have enough for one more day". Well, this time I didn't...

My dad always used to run out of gas. He would try to make it as far as he could claiming there was a "reserve" of 5 gallons or something. When you get on empty you can usually go a little ways, but I've learned never to cut it too close.

My light comes on when I get down to about 3 gallons of gas. I guess that's my "reserve". My old car didn't have a warning light, but I knew that I could go a little bit below E and still be good.

Oh, I know it's not a money issue, I use the same amount of gas wether I keep it on half a tank or empty. I would just have to fill it more often if I kept it at half a tank. And sometimes I just can't be bothered with it...

I do. I can usually get about 320 miles for a full tank of gas. Unfortunately, the last time I got gas, I forgot to reset my trip meter, so I was thinking I could go to 640 miles. I think my math was a bit off on this one. I made sure to reset the meter last night when I filled up.

I have never ran out of gas, but I do sometimes ran it on low. Sometimes funds are low, or its too cold or I am in a hurry so I won't stop for gas. I kind of have an idea when I am really in danger of running out. I would call TRipple AAA if I ran out.

Yeah, I thought I knew when I was running out too... Not this time!!! I always feel like I'm in a hurry and don't have time to stop for gas - that's going to have to change! Instead of "Stop and smell the flowers" I'll say "Stop and pump the gas"!

My husband panics at 1/4 tank! In the year we've had his truck, the light has only come on twice. The first time we filled it right away and I figured out how many gallons he had left, we knew the mileage he got so I was able to figure out how many miles he could go once the light came on. The second time he didn't want to test my calculations and got gas right away. I guess that was a smart move on his part.

My husband thinks I should keep the gas can in the car with me, but I don't have a trunk so I would have to smell the fumes all the time. I'll just have to start being more careful.

That's great that your father was able to help you out. I would have had to wait a really long time if my son wasn't able to get some gas to me.

You sound like my DH. If I had a dollar for everytime he has run out of gas since I met him I would have a much bigger house! So people like to live on the edge.

Oh, this is the first time I've ran out in YEARS! And hopefully the last!! I don't need that much "edge" in my life :)

At least you can admit your mistake, even if you've kept repeating it! *laugh* I think that it's great that you can do so. I think that it is best to fill up the tank, or at least to start thinking of it, when you get a bit less than halfway towards empty. I know that it's not always easy to stick to that kind of a motto, but it's a good gauge. ^_^

Oh, we're actually enjoying laughing about this. Pretty sad, but it's the highlight of my week!!! It's just a bad habit and I really need to be more aware of it. I will try harder from now on. Maybe it's about time I actually learned from my mistake????

My husband is still laughing about it! He'll be bugging me next week every day to see how much gas I have left.

You should be more careful. What if you run out of gas in a bad area of town? Or there is no gas station, and you have to walk miles to get to one? I'd be filling it when it got to 1/4 a tank.

I'm going to try to be better, really. I was fortunate that I was right across the street from my work and it's a decent area. But, it could have been a lot worse.

I wait until the light is on and then I still push it. I have not ran out of gas before, but I'm sure I will one day (knock on wood) My husband hate's when I do this but I can't stand putting gas in the car. So when we are going out, we have to decide which car has gas, it is usually his.lol

Oh, I don't mind putting gas in the car - except when it's cold... I just hate stopping. Once I get in the car, I don't like to stop until I'm where I need to be.
My husbands work pays for his gas so he always fills it on Fridays or something. We take his car when we go anywhere - he ALWAYS has gas!! We even talked a few times this weekend that we had to take his car because I was low on gas... Will I ever learn???

I really do need to get better, but it's such a bad habit that I've had for such a long time. Maybe I can work backwards. If I start now when the light comes on I will fill it. Then I can work on filling it BEFORE he light comes on. My husband thinks I should keep the gas can in the car for now on.

I have only ran out of gas ONCE and it was just recently happened actually. I told my hubby that the car needed gas, and he said do you wanna get it now or wait till after we goto walmart. and i said well it can wait, cause we have enough to goto walmart and come home, and what not...Well the next day i was on my way back to work and i have a very short drive to work, it is around the corner...Well i get to the busiest road in my town and i get ready to turn on to the road and the car jsut quit! Just shut down :( and i pressed the gas enough that i could coast down the road and get to the side street believe it or not, next ot he police station...And a car pulled behind me, and i motioned for them to go around me, and it jsut so happened to be the chief of police :):):) He got some officers to push my car into a parking spot and got me gas..I called my work told them i would be latem y car ran out of gas, they sent two of the guys out ot find me and make sure i was ok. i called my hubby, he couldnt help but laugh and say i told you so, LMAO!!! Its all good, i got a full tank of gas and i really watch it now.

You really lucked out with all the help you got! That was very nice of everyone to pitch in. I had 2 police officers drive right by me last night. I guess the figured I was ok. I'm glad my son was able to get me the gas!!

I am a very paranoid driver anyway, so I tend to get freaked out when my gas gauge is at less than a half a tank. I've always been this way and thankfully, I've never ran out of gas before getting to a station.
Then again, I'd rather run out of gas than to have my car break down on me in the middle of the road (which HAS happend to me...lol)

Oh man, I've had a car break down before too... That's worse I think because you can't just fix it really quick and be on your way. But running out of gas can be preventable so it's more embarrassing. Well, I know I wont see you on the side of the road waiting for a gas can!
