Do you prefer a automatic or a stick shift in a car? Can you drive a stick shift? Why do you have this preference?
Please no one word answers. I'll read and rate each reply. I'll respond where I can but wanted to say thank you in advance for any responses.

I prefer a stick shift because they are fun to drive.I have a blast shifting gears. Also they do get better gas mileage than automatics (usually).I was in my mid-twenties when I learned to drive a stick and I immediately fell in love. Also, shifting and clutching keep me busy enough that I don't get bored while driving. However,I do have a bad habit of riding the clutch, which drives my husband nuts. But the upside to that is that I use the clutch more than the brake,so I don't wear the brakes out.

I prefer an automatic, it is easier to drive. I can drive a stick shift but only do so if I have to. Sometimes the stick shift is the only vehicle left at home and if I need to go somewhere I have to drive it. So, I can drive a stick shift, I just think an automatic is a lot easier to drive and faster for me.

I leaned how to drive when I was 14 on a pick up truck with a stick shift. It is something you never forget. However, I do prefer an automatic, as it is a lot easier on your knees in traffic, than a clutch.

Here in Ireland most people learn to drive stick shift because if you learn to drive with an automatic and you pass a driving test for an automatic, then you need to do another test for a stick shift.
All my cars have been stick shift. The first time I drove an automatic was when I hired a car in Toronto two years ago. It was an awful experience. It took so long for me to get used to it and I hated the way I had no control over the gears.

I can drive a stick shift if I have to and I dare anyone to get close to me when I have to stop on a hill. LOL I would much rather drive an automatic. It is just so much easier and I dont have to worry about people pulling up too close to me when I am on a hill.

My cousin took me out to learn how to drive a stick shift on her husband's new car. He only had it about a week. Although she told me that I did very well with my first time driving, I didn't like it. She asked me why. I told her that you didn't have to think about driving an automatic. You jump in, turn the key and drop it into drive. No fancy footwork involved.

When I took drivers' ed in high school we had simulators for standard transmission. I couldn't even keep it running, lol! I learned stick on a school bus, while also learning my rural route, city girl that I am. I made that bus bounce up and down. It was five speed with a split rear transmission. We own two automatics and one standard right now. Hubby drives the standard because he drives further, and it gets much better gas mileage.(Over 40 mpg. and it is an older car) Truth is, he gets better mileage out of all of the cars. I don't care what I drive, just give me a car and let it be mine, don't mess with it, clean it out, or anything. Do not fool around with my key chain.

When I learned to drive we had automatic shift cars but then when I was about 17 I was involved in a car accident so my dad took our automatic vehicles and traded them in for stick shift which meant I was going to need to learn to drive all over again. I did and now I love stick shift cars I can drive almost anything and I also think it helps the drivers to be more aware of there driving because you are forced to pay attention I think if more people drove stick shift there would be less stupid accidents.
