s it is right when compare to petrol engine disel engine has breakdowns, because u may notice that the calorific value of disel is less when compare to petrol. u may notice that there is a main problem in disel engine called cold starting it is also the main reason of the disel engine have breakdown . and the engine may get heat fastly while comparing to disel engine.

diesel engine are strong and needs less maintenance. However, they are little bit noisier, harder to start in cold weather, burns more oil than petrol engines, and require a close eye on temperature gauge.

I am a Mechanical engineer having exprience on both diesels and petrols and it is true that diesels have a higher maintenance cost than petrol but the period between maintenance is longer than petrol . The cost of diesel is also less as compared to petrol. so these two act in favour of diesel engines . If you want to decide between a petrol or a diesel car let me know i might be able to help you.
