Children think outside of the box...

United States

When my older daughter was in elementary school, we had a cold enough day that there was frost on my car windows (we live in Florida, so it doesn't happen too often). So, I went out and started the car to warm it up and to defrost the windows before leaving. On the way back out to take her to school, she asked about the lines in the back window. I did my best to explain how they heat up to melt the ice, while still making it easy enough for her to grasp the concept. Suddenly, she stopped me.... and said, "Oh, like a toaster!" I had to stop myself from laughing and say, "Yes, just like a toaster." Now, as an adult, I never would have compared the two things, but children think outside of the box and see things in an entirely different way. What have your children said to you that completely surprised you? Share your stories!

Oh I know how rare that is since I live in Florida as well :) That is a good comparision though. I do agree that kids sometimes think very differently then us. Back when my niece was in first grade President Bush was first running for president. Of course the teacher was trying to get the kids interested in the election. To learn things from it. That made sense to us. We asked her which one she liked, she said she liked Bush and we asked her why. She said it was because when he smiled he smiled with his eyes. The other guy didn't seem to really smile. She said the other guy looked like he was only smiling cause he was supposed to. I thought that was so interesting insight on her part.

I always think of the rear heater like that too. Kids have the best persective my son asked me about the phrase Ginger Ninja which he overheard on TV, he wanted to know if they were mean ginger bread men and what their special powers were, we made up a story about the Ginger Ninjas together and it was pretty good.

Isn't it funny when they hear you say something, but misunderstand and have their whole new meaning in their heads? I wish my imagination were as good as a child's!

When my son was 5 We decided to take his training wheels off his bike. I was showing him how to do it with out using them and he showed me. He just took off like he had been without him the whole time! After riding and riding I was amazed by how natural it come to him. Later that evening, he asked me how he knew how to do it without those little wheels. I said I don't know, what do you think? He said the sweetest smartest thing possible. I think God helped me do it. I said you know you are probally right. He said I know I am momma. This was way before we were invovled regulary with church.

Well I hope that no one is offended by this, but I found this quite funny and yes, to me it's thinking outside the box lol. I do not have children of my own, but I hear stories all the time from my sisters about the things their kids do or say. Apparently one day my neice was out Christmas shopping with her daddy..just the two of them. Well my brother in law had to go pee so of course he took Emma (my neice) in with him (she's only 4 years old so obviously cannot be left alone). Anyways, he put Emma in a corner of the bathroom where he could still see her..kinda hoping she didn't see him peeing. Anyways, as my brother in law explained to me, all he could see was this little head peaking around and this look of surprise on her face. She then said in the cutest little voice and full of surprise: "Ohhh..so you do have a tail!!" I still laugh whenever I think about this lol..

OMG! That is so funny because when my older daughter was 3, she walked in on my husband while he was peeing, and then came out and asked me why Daddy had a tail! lol! I love it!

I just love what comes out of the mouths of babes :) My son is almost 2 1/2 and a little bit speech delayed so I'm still waiting for what'll end up coming out of his mouth.

Yeah, I really admire and love kids. Your story reminded me of my little cousin. I was taking a video of our dog, he was watching, he asked me what I was doing, so I told him "I'm taking a video". He asked what's a video, followed by lots of question, he talked without a cut ΓΌ. After his so much asking, I had to pause and think (though I know what a video is, i don't know!). He asked me, What was I thinking if it is about the video thing, I replied yes, then he said, "Sorry but I think I already know the answer, it's like you're taking pictures but it's continuous and you can see the movement and hear sounds." I was to tell him that, he's right, but what amazed me was when he said that, "You can find answers to your own questions." Our main language is not english, it sounds better in our native tongue.

When my daughter was 3, I had taking her with me to where my father worked, and she of course had to go and say hi to the boss. well he proceeded to give her some money, but he held out both hands, in one he had 5 pennies and in the other he had a dollar bill. she grabbed to 5 pennies, and when he asked her why she took that instead of the dollar, she said because it was more money.

Awww! That's so funny! My little one was helping me with a yard sale once, and an older couple came to see what we had. My daughter (4 at the time) had a quarter in her hand, and showed the elderly couple her money and said, "I save my money." What do you think they did? They opened their wallet and handed my child a dollar bill! Smart kid! lol

Kids are influenced by the surrounding around them. I believe that if their parents teach the kids in correct order, hey will grow up as an intelligent and smart person. Parents and surroundings are the key factor that contribute to the way on thinking of the children.

Our kids are so awsome, aren't they? I couldn't possibly imagine my life without my son. Enjoy the kids while they're still young enough to laugh with{which should be for much longer than 18 years} Lela
