I have a lots of friends who listen to Green Day. When i say listen i mean that they are with them from the beginning, since their firs album. And we now disagree about one thing. They don't like album American Idiot because they think its commercialized and they even dont like people who started listening to Green Day from American Idiot. I listen to green day since Nimrod but i also like American Idiot and i dont think that last album was disaster. In fact i love it, especially songs like Jesus of Suburbia, Whatsername, St.Jimmy, Wake me up when September ends, Homecoming. This songs bring back memories which i had a long time ago.
Do you also think that they are now commercialized?

I started listening (and listening and listening and listening) to green day from 2002 I think.I'm realy glad for them that they become popular but I don't think that this popularity will seize their inspiration to create better songs,so good for them. They're not going to become one of those bands that just want to make money with commercial songs I'm sure of this!

I think anyone who says that "American Idiot" is commercialized obviously doesn't get the whole point of the album. Admittedly, the songs in "American Idiot" are less lacerating than Green Day's previous studio outputs mainly because Billy Joe and the gang wanted to make a concept album--a punk rock opera to be exact. They may have gotten soft in some songs like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends" but taken in the context of the album, these two songs (and the rest of the album for that matter) take on new meaning in light of recent events. Just like what The Clash did with "London Calling", Green Day has made an album that has plenty of meaning and relevance, and rocks, too. I think this is their most "punk" album yet. A "Walking Contradiction" so to speak. But in the best way possible.

I've been listening to Green Day since their album Dookie. Not exactly the beginning but close enough. Personally I don't think they've become too commercialized at all. In fact they've only gotten better over the years. As with everything, it evolves...music especially. And you can see that, or hear it rather, in their music.

I also think that they got better over the years, and so do Billie and crew. There is something very special in last songs, probably because they have more emotions than songs before. Thats just my opinion.
Anyway, thanks to your response.

no one believes me when i say this, but ive been a green day fan since i was 4. since im 18, a lot of people think that im lying about that to make myself seem like a real fan or whatever, and that i only began listening when american idiot came out. to be honest, i dont think american idiot is half as good as 1039/smoothed out slappy hours, kerplunk, or dookie. dookie is my favorite album, and always has been. thats green day to me. i think that the american idiot was forced on them, because a lot of the real green day fans grew up, and they needed to come out with an album that would attract young teenagers again. so i dont know, really. if green day would come out with an album like dookie again, they would probably loose all these new fans they have. i wish they would come out with an album that would please both the new fans and old fans. im sick of being called a green day band-wagon jumper poser or whatever by these dumb "true" green day fans that thought american idiot was their first cd.
