Then I saw this discussion title the first thing I thought of was the birth of our son. But an actual present someone bought for me, would have to be from our son as well. He bought me a watch when he was about 7 years old and I still have it today. The history is that we had a dairy farm and our son used to help rear the calves and once they were weaned he was given a couple of them for himself, so one year he decided that he wanted to sell a couple to buy my birthday present.
So unknown to either of us he phoned a friend who was a stock and station agent and said he wanted to sell these weaner calves. The agent said he wouldn't arrange the sale till he spoke to us, so son insisted that he talk to his father only. My husband apparently tried to convince our son that he could keep the weaners and he would give him the money. No, son had to sell the weaners because he wanted to use HIS money. Duly sold and the agent took no fees out of it either when he knew the reason for the sale.
Son goes with his father to jewellers and asks to see watches for Mum's birthday. The jeweller is a friend of ours and tries to get son to view the less expensive ones, but son puts all his money on counter and says I have this much and want to spend it all. Well, he got me a lovely watch which I still wear today and the jeweller gave him a good one at just above cost price, so son still had a few dollars left over and bought me some flowers.
As I said I still have that watch and wear it only when we are going out as it is very precious, maybe not in price but because of what our son did.

Yes I know I am very lucky with our son. He also has good taste and has bought me many pieces of jewellery over the years and as I have a base metal allergy it has always been good stuff. So some day some lucky lady might thank me for training him only to buy decent jewellery. LOL
In fact it was only tonight that the name of this jeweller came up because our son needs some work done on a ring he has. He is a bit concerned about giving it to "just anyone" but our friend has now retired. I might just have to make a phone call to him tomorrow and see if he can help.

I would say the best gift/s I have ever received was the birth of my 2 children, it may not be what you are wanting to know but this is the one that tops all for me!

The best present, actually several of them, were the fruit cakes my sister-in-law used to make when I was in the Navy. She used to make sure I had a couple before we left to go overseas, and then would send one to me every few weeks we were away. Liberally dosed with rum to make sure they wouldn't go dry, but they sure were good. You could smell the cake (and rum too of course) as soon as I opened the package from her.
After the first couple my mates in the mess would make sure the parcel reached my hands as soon as it arrived onboard. She continued to send these to me for about 4 years, on every trip that I made overseas in that time. You know, when at home they never did taste the same as they did when I was overseas.

I've received some wonderful presents, but perhaps the ons that meant most to me were those I received when I was in my late teens/early 20s, such as a pair of two-tone 20s style shoes, and a Humphrey Bogart raincoat. I eventually gave the soes away; and the raincoat...I have no idea what happened to it.

I think the best gift was when my mum gave me a handbag from my 13th birthday, and i'm like "cool!!" then i opened it and there was a walkman inside (this was like 1997) I was soo happy!. But my best pressie this year was a new handbag to replace the 9 year old one i had.

This is a tie - one is a box of goodies such as body products, hand creams, Christmas Teddy and A Christmas singing frog that I received from my sons and the twin's girlfriends for Christmas just gone - because everyone collaborated and decided what to buy to fill the box. It really touched my heart. The other is a white gold bangle with diamonds that my husband had made especially for me - without my knowledge - for our 25 wedding anniversary last year. He wanted me to have a lasting memento of his love, and had never bought me jewellery without me picking it out - and there are only my engagement, wedding and eternity rings really. So I was delighted, touched and overjoyed that he went to the trouble of getting someone to make up what he thought I would like - and I do - I love it :)

you are right the best gift we can have is that we have a wonderful family...or that we have great friends and are healthy...
yes i was referring to presents we receive (hence i had it in the topic) and i am like you..i do so much prefer to give presents/gifts than receive them....there is that special satisfaction in seeing the pleasure on someone elses face...though unfortunately i dont always have much if any money to give anything but my friendship and time....and i am often embarrassed a little when friends spend so much money and time to get me a gift...
thanks for your response
