Don't expect your dog to talk back ... please.

I hate when people say "see, Fido understands me when I talk to him ...". Dogs understand a command if there is a reward to understanding it. It is all behavior related, folks. I watched this couple last week confuse the hell out of their poor dog. The man would tell the dog "Down" to lay down while the woman was saying "Down" when the dog jumped on her. Then they looked at the dog and said something about what a dumb dog he was. Hello, who is the moron here? Well, it is not the dog. Keep the same words for the same actions. The term "Down" cannot mean two things to this poor animal. People should have to have basic dog training skills before they buy a dog.

i'm not agree with you.You have right in the fact that the moron were they. But i must tell you that i have a dog to.He is 11 years old.He is verry smart. He can understand me only if i loock at him.For example sometimes he understand that i go out with him only if i loock at him.He knows about chocolate, about onion becouse he doesn't licke it at all, he knows about a lot of thinck's.When i'm outside with him and i say"loock there is dady" he start loocking for him between people..and many other thinck's so i'm agree with the fact that dog in theyr way's really talk back in the way that they behaive.

Like your dog, mine get's excited when I just say Daddy is home or where's daddy. So I think they are like kids, they can associate some words with important things. She knows her name. Your better off getting down on the floor, if your going to get mine to sit, lol. She knows what it means, just has that I don't think so attitude. Mine will sit in front of me and give me looks, her way of telling me Hey, I need to go out before I do it on your carpet, lol. She's a special dog, just like having another kid in the house.

I diss agree because I know dog's that understand ther owners. They come home and tell the dog something like go and whait me in the room and the dog goes there and whait's for him. The dog was never traind specialy but the owners talkd a lot with that dog. It's a cookie idee but true, do you agree?

If you going to train your dog yourself just have one person do not a couple. Because as you mentioned yes the poor thing will get confused. If not take the dog to obedience school, where he will be taught correctly. I use to train St bernards. And that was indeed a chore.

Only one person should do the initial training, teaching your dog to do a certain behavior following a word. After the initial training your partner and children have to work with the dog and have to use the same commands as not to confuse the dog but help it to communicate with everyone that lives with him. A lot of people think that if they bring there dog to dog training the dog will do everything for them that it does for the trainer, but that is not true just by the fact that every person sounds different even when they give the same command.
Anyway, I will enroll my dog in a Basic Obedience Training Class, and they ask that the couple shows up and not just one person.

Also along with this the dog does NOT necessarily know the word but is responding to the tone of your voice.

I have to disagree with you. My dog does talk back, I am serious. Due to his breeding he comments on everything with a different sound for annoyance, defiance, and acceptance. Some people think he is grumpy, but he is not. He is a lover and a high maintenance animal because he is so vocal.

Hello here, I am one of those people that knows my dog understands me. Even without a reward. I can say the work GO in any sentence and he is at the door waiting to go with me. Also he knows the diffrences between the words Ball and Baby that sound somewhat alike. Because I can say get your Baby and he gets his doggie or If I say get your ball he does that. He also knows up and down. He knows mommy and daddy and a lot of our friends and family when they come in. He barks madly when someone comes to the door until he knows who it is. His name is Jazz and he isn"t a dumb dog.

dogs are particularly very intelligent animals, they can understand your action what are you trying to say, and understands most of the words if you teach them well. though they do not understand everything we say but they do understand most of it or some of it.

Also, your dog has never gone in the store and picked out a sweater. Let the dog be a dog.

I am sorry about the way you feel. I have had pets all along. Believe me, it can understand five meanings to one particular word...it that is an exaggeration! Dogs are very smart, you can tell them 'down', 'get down', 'jump down', 'slow down' etc. Even the single word 'down' could mean differently in different circumstances and the dogs are capable of understanding it unless it is a small puppy or a naughty one!

Dogs do understand verbal commands from another, the tone in which you say the command. They are sensitive to our moods too.

I completely agree with the second part of your discussion. One word should be used for down and another for off. Dogs can understand many words, but they are not mind readers. If you use "down" for two different things, the dog is most likely thinking, "which down does he want me to do?" If he picks the wrong one, he gets punished. That is the handler's error. But I believe dogs can learn different command words from different people. I taught my German Shepherd search and rescue. I used German commands when out working, but at home the family used different commands and she responded to each of them well. However, German Shepherds are a very smart breed. I read once that researchers tested some smart dogs to try to determine how many words they know. It was determined that some dogs knew up to 500 words.

Well I don't think you know a lot about Dogs then as My Dog DOES understand what I say to him and I don't mean commands either
Dogs are actually very intelligent so I am sorry I have to disagree with you at the Fact that Dogs do not understand
I do agree with you that those People where dumb as only Person should throw the Command and not confuse the poor thing by both shouting at him and they should not shout either

Well, although I do not think you need any special training to be a dog owner, it does help to know they are not human!I have a big thing about treating my baby girl, just like that, a baby. So as Cesar Milan would say, She is not balanced. She does know who is boss though. She knows the command for stop doing whatever it is you are doing is "no ma'am!" and it is always the same. She knows when I say, "do you want to go for a ride?" She can go to the car. If I do not say this, or if I say, "no ma'am" she cannot go and does not even try. She knows when we are eating she is not allowed in the room. If she comes to the door I just tell her "no ma'am" and she lies down. The key is you have to discipline them before you love them. They must be totally focused on you and calm before you give them love. They also need exercise, and not just running around the yard. They need controlled exercise by going for a walk each day. Selena minds me better than my own children sometimes. I wish the same rules applied to both..lol

yeah . u r right bro.some people r really dumb, they think the dog can talk to u as u say. but its not like. it understands wht the action or sound says so tht he can get his snack or reward for doin such a thing. this is how they respond. they only respond to actions but not the way as u say.if u say a dog to do the same thing in other ways he wont do, he will only respond to the sound which he has got habituated to it. this is how his mentality works.
