I was wondering if anyone one here lives in or has lived in a real log home or cabin? Or, if you know someone that does or did at some time. Maybe you are dreaming of or planning to live in a log home one day. I am interested in any experiences you might like to share. Thanks.

I have always desired to live in one, but it didn't happen. I think that they are so beautiful. I know one person who had one. They said that they are very dark inside. That was the only negative remark. Other than that, she liked it a lot.

The darkness can be remedied with plenty of windows and additional light. With lighter woods inside, the light is easily reflected and presents a lively hue. Maybe there is still a chance for you to live in one. It is a dream I am never giving up on.

Hello Sigma, We have friends who own a staggeringly beautiful piece of property on Lake George, NY. They have a spectaclar log home on the property, and they absolutely love it. My brother also aspired to have a log home. So, he and his wife bought a lovely log cabin on a couple of acres on Sacadaga Lake, also in Upstate NY. It isn't as grand as the other I referenced, rather rustic and much simpler, but it still has three bedrooms on the second floor. And, there's nothing like going to the lake and sleeping in the comfort and natural beauty of a log cabin. Talk about turning back the clock to a simpler time! My husband and I have considered it. And perhaps someday as a vacation home. But, I really like finished interiors, something that is possible in a log home, but it seems rather a contradiction to the beauty of the wood. So, I guess I'll resign myself to a traditional home -- for now.

You made my day. Upstate NY is beautiful. The perfect place for a log home. I love them and plan on building one if I can. You can go online and find dozens of log home sites and see marvelous pics, both inside and out. After looking at them, I can't stand to look at a stick home.

Yup, you're right. Upstate NY is truly beautiful. And, there are many fabulous lakes for your dream log-home. Sadly, the state government has created such an unpleasant living environmnent by means of over taxation and over legislation, that many, many people are choosing to build their dream retirement home elsewhere. For the stated reasons, we'll never move back to NY. So, if we want to build that dream cabin, we'll just have to find another more retirement friendlier, 'woodsy' type state. Have you considered where you'd like to build your dream cabin?

No, Nothing definite. I might stay in Michigan. But I would also consider several western states. I love North Carolina, but don't really want to go east. And I think the Smokey Mountain area in Tennessee would be spectacular. It would have to be a place where many people aren't already. Florida and California and Arizona are out of the running. New York is nice, but I would consider Maine or Vermont if it wasn't so cold for so long in the winter. Then again, it might not be much different than northern Michigan. How about you?

I had a friend on lake Wixom that had a log cabin. It unfortunatley burnt down in 74 though. I am from Dearborn Heights MI originally and used to go to Whitmore Lake back in the 60's. Small world. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Cool. Our family used to go to Camp Dearborn a lot in the 60's. I grew up in Redford. But my grandfather lived in Dearborn. I drove by Whitmore Lake at least 100 times over the years and never stopped. It is nice out here, quiet and not to much over-developed.

I have not live in a log home. I have always heard stories about people who built a log home and then lived in it. I wonder--but they don't seem like they would be that comfortable.
