Snacking in the Grocery Store

Do you grab a snack while shopping for groceries? I have occasionally opened a box of crackers and munched on them while shopping. It isn't good practice to shope while you are hungry. It is a proven fact that when you shop when you are hungry that you are prone to buy on impulse.
It is okay to open a box of crackers, cookies or some other snack item as long as you pay for it at the checkout.

That's so funny that you started this discussion today. I was at Wal-Mart with my 9 month old today and he started fussing, it was snack time, and I grabbed a bag of low calorie chips ahoy and started to feed them to him. It's really not something I like to do, I feel kinda bad, even though I am going to pay for them. I have seen some people who do that and just put it back on a shelf.

That is disgusting that people start snacking on things at the store and then decide to put it back on the shelf. They should be forced to pay for it or get in trouble. If you eat it, you buy is my opinion on people eating things and putting them back. :-)

It is even more disgusting when you work for the store and find something half eaten and put back on the shelf. I once found a can of those little hot dogs...I think they are called vienna sausages...half eaten and then put back on the shelf to smell up the aisle and look at gross. I hated it when people would eat in the store. You never knew if they were going to buy it or if they were going to hide the container/package to be found later.

I know where you are coming from. I have opened snacks for my kids many times in the store, of course I always pay for them. There was this one time I could not convince my two year old that he could have anything else besides a banana. I really got a strange look from the clerk when I brought up a banana peel and one whole banana about the same size so she could weigh it and charge me for it. It is still one of those funny memories I treasure now that my kids are old enough to know better. I guess I really don't see anything wrong with it as long as you pay for it.

No, I can't say that I have ever opened up anything in the store. The one thing I always laughed about is watching someone grab a handful of peanuts that are in the bulk and eat them all the way through the store. There is no way they are paying for those. The same with grapes.
My sister-in-law ate a peanut at Walmart, and tried to give them .25 for it. They made her stand there while they went and got 1 peanut to weigh up, it cost .02. They should have taken her .25. lol

That is funny. My exmother-in-law would sample the grapes to make sure they were sweet enough. After consuming at least 1/4 lb she would buy some.

i have to agree with you that it's never a good idea to shop while hungry...though i have never grab a snack while shopping..i will make sure that i eat something first before i go shopping. i dont know, i tend to feel so guilty taking something off the shelves and eating it straight.

I've personally never done this, I've always wondered if I'd get in trouble for doing this. I've taken the free samples but thats it. My mom just told me about my great grandpa. He would go get a bunch of grapes and bunch on a few while he was shopping in the grocery store. Not exactly sure how he did that since they have to weighed to figure out the price. But I guess back then the store didn't complain over a few grapes?
I do try to not go grocery shopping when hungry cause the few times I have I've always left with more than I actually came into the store for. More of that impulse buying lol.
I don't see anything wrong with opening a snack and eating it while shopping now that I know that is ok. As long as its something you pay by the package and not the lbed.
As far as people eating half and putting it back on the shelf thats downright disgusting. Gross! I'd hate to pick up a package like that.

I don't think it is right. Because it really isn't yours until you purchase it. At any point before payment, it can be put back. And I can tell you, I have seen people eating things in the grocery store and then put the open container back on the shelf. I am not saying that this is what you are doing...but really, it is another form of stealing because it is not technically yours until you pay for it.
But that is just my opinion and something I teach my children also. Even down to the youngest, he knows it is not his and can not open it until I pay for it.

Gosh Tia, I never thought of that fact. It is not that I do it often, but there have been a few times when I have sampled from a box while shopping. But they always get paid for.

Occasionally I will open something that i am going to buy to snack on, but usually i eat before i go grocery shopping to help not buy things i don't need. My son sometimes gets antsy while grocery shopping so if i am buying fruit snacks for him i will give him a pack.

No .. I don't think I would dare to .. hehehehe ... I can just see you handing over your empty crisp packet to a startled till girl heheheh !!
I tell you what I have done though .. and on more than one occasion ... I find the intense smell down the washing powder aisle can make my nose run ... and guess what it's always when I have forgotten to take out a tissue or left them in the car ... so I have to scurry round to the tissue aisle and grab a box .... hurry up and get it open to blow my nose ...
I've even had to tussle at the checkout to keep my opened box when the girl has tried to insist on getting me an 'undamaged' box hahahaha ...

I think it is fine. I always do this for my kids becuase it seems to help them behave better. I have never had any problems with the stores either. They seem fine with it when my girl hands them a half eatten bag of goldfish.

I agree with you that when hungry we tend to buy much more than we otherwise would but as adults I think we need to practice restraint. Even Diabetics do not make a habit of doing this-and they have health issues. The key is to eat before going shopping. Or snack in your car before going in to shop. Imagine the cost to store owners (then passed on to us the consumers) if many people did this. I know you pay for yours but many people don't. It also isn't fair to the owners of the store to have to wonder if you plan on paying or not. Now- granted we have all tasted a grape before buying a bunch-I am guilty of having done that too but I no longer do that as I realize if everyone took a grape there would be no grapes left to be sold and as little as it seems it does add up and amounts to theft. Again, I'm not saying you are a thief as you clearly stated you pay for your product but I still think we shouldn't open the packages and if we must-we should simply go to the express line or customer service and pay for the item-get a receipt and then we can munch to our hearts content :-) ps interesting topic

I once went shopping with a new friend;this happened aobut 13 years ago... she got some chili mac at the deli and a carton of chocolate milk and when she was done, she hid the trash in the shelves behind stock. Nice, huh? And we wonder why the prices are higher every year??

That is so wrong. If you are going to consume something, pay for it.

I have never snacked in the supermarket or given anything to my children when they were younger but my son and daughter are both now married with their own children and they give their children something to eat while they are shopping . They pay for it but i always feel uncomfortable about it if i am with them. Maybe that is the next generation they don't really care as they always say mum we are not stealing we are going to pay for it .

I have to say as much as I want to snack on something Im scared that someone would accuse me of stealing or something so I just hold my horses until I get to the check out line.

During shopping if you grab a snack then its your duty to pay for it while you leave the shop. Otherwise your this habbit will creat a great problem some day for you. So be honest while shopping or where ever you are.

I personally have never eaten while I'm shopping HOWEVER I do let my little one snack on something I have already put in the basket. Why??? It keeps him settled in the basket while I shop. I am always afraid though that someone is going to think I plan on not paying for it which is absolutely not true. And I would never let him eat fruit (which I see a lot of people doing) because it must be washed before eating and it has to be weighed in order to pay for it.
