From what my daughter tells me, there soon will be a bill introduced that will decide if gym classes stay as a required course in school or if it will become an elective, or if it will be eliminated all together.
She just had to write a paper about it and she is against this bill because she says that teens need the exercise. I totally agree with her! Too many kids come home from school and either go right to the TV or computer and don't move. For some kids, gym class is the only exercise they get!
What do you think?

Personally, I think gym class (PE class) is a poor attempt trying to decrease the obseity in the US. I say poor because what do you actually do in gym class? Kinf of play sports, but mostly stand around until the ball comes to you and then kick or throw it away so you don't have to deal with it. I think it's a forced way to get nids who are nerds and athletically inclined to get some excercise. At my college, we are required to take 4 sememsters of gym. This is because we are an engineering school that has high academic standards. We are all nerds. But anyway, I don't think gym should be required, especially if a student plays a varsity sport. I played 3 varsity sports in high school, but still had to take gym. That was a waste of time for me.

i agree with you...
its kind of become a trend now, finish school, go home,
do something on the computer, watch tv, dont go out, go in for sleepovers and dont do any exercise!!!this not at all healthy and the bill is not going to help anyone, why dont they give attention to more important things???

I do agree that gym is important for students but I only think that it should be a requirement in grades 9 and below. When I was in my first year of highschool, gym was a requirement but then became an option after that. I think by the time kids get to grade 10 they will be aware enough of the health risks involved in not getting their exercise...it should be left up to them. Besides, in grade 10 students still have to get their parent's to sign a form to allow them to take their chosen courses, so I suppose parents could force them into taking gym if they really wanted to.

I do think they should keep it, although there are circumstances where if a child is unable to really participate, they can be excused from it w/o being punished for it. My 14 yr old has severe asthma. They MAKE him run a mile in just a few mins. No more then 7 or 8. He then goes into convulsive fits of an asthma attack. Half the time he is sent home depending on the time of year.
He actually gets lots of exercise in other ways, he skateboards, and wave boards, he knows his physical limits and knows how to control his asthma as best as it can be. he constantly carries an inhaler. As a mother/aunt (he's my sister's biological son but I've raised him) of a child with kind of condition I do think it should be demanitory if there are no such circumstance, and elective if a condition can be proved via doctors records and doctors release.

With the world getting more technology and gadget addicted,
it's natural that people lose out on physical exercise. For students it's necessary to understand the importance of it and there couldn't be a better place than school. I believe the gym classes should stay as a compulsion.

I absolutely agree. I have not heard of anything like that here in Ontario. In fact the government now is giving people money if they want thier children to take extra-curricular activities...such as swimming etc. This is thier way of getting children off the couch and into activities. They are even thinking of giving adults the same opportunity...so I think that is great!

I am guessing it might be a local school board question, or possibly a state option. At this time the federal guidlines are in fact suggesting more physical activity, so I can not see a federal bill like that. I could be wrong, though. We are just beginning to really push wellness programs in our state, and locally, we cannot even take a child's recess or PE away from them to do make up work or as punishment. We are having to show that the kids get physical activity for a certain number of minutes, most days of the week. We took pop machines out of the school as well. That was district level. Yes the kids need PE!

Personally, from all I've gathered from the PE classes anymore are so lame I don't really think it matters. If they were to have PE teachers that really were teachers instead of thinking they're army sargents it would help. Most give no initiative to do anything. As long as you pass with a C it's fine and to be honest how interested can you be in running a circle over and over and calling that gym? I think they need to do a major rehaul on more than PE classes!!!!!!! It's sad all around.

When I went to high school it was required for one year. After that you could take different types as an elective. I do think that it needs to stay part of the curriculum. I also think teens & kids need to learn to how to be more active on their own though. Once you gte out of school there will not be someone telling you that you have to exercise every day.

They would never elimate gym classes because of the rise in child besity and the fact that everyone loves to play dodgeball.

I agree with you. I can't believe the are even considering doing away with the only excercise most kids get. I have heard program after program that is dealing with childhood obesity, and how kids need to get up and get moving. This bill would certainly be a great blow to the movement.

I think Gym is something that definatly needs to stay put in school. Our kids need exercise!!! I would imagine a higher ratio in obseity in kids if they get rid of Gym

What a bummer for the kids if they take P.E. out of school. I don't think that the school systems should take it out or even make it an elective. Our kids these days arent active enough like we were when we were their age. I can understand keeping some kids out of P.E. for health reasons but not just for general purposes.

P.E in schools is important and essential for the kids brain and to produce the well rounded kids. They not only expose to the academic stuff, but they must balance their academic with sports or social activity. So that they will become a well rounded student. Remember that well rounded not only judge by their academic achievements, but it involved extra curriculum activities and social activity..
