It depends on the age, but most kids, even little ones can get the meaning of The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein. I made sure each of my kids had a copy of that, along with other Shel Silverstein books. Both of my kids enjoyed The Chronicles of Narnia, and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and the Hobbit.

I enjoyed those books as a kid too.. and even as an adult :) Haven't heard of Shel Silverstein though. Will look into that. Thanks for sharing.

That depends on different things. The age and interest of the child, mainly. Then, their reading level. But, one book that I think is timeless is Charlotte's Web. Or, you could try books by Beverly Cleary, like the Ramona or Henry Huggins books. Or, the series A Series of Unfortunate Events. These are for elementary school kids. There are other books I'd recommend for young adults or kindergarteners.
