What's the difference between a CV (Curriculum Vitae) and a Resume? In your covering letter which term do you use? When? Could I have some suggestions please.

Okay i think the basic differenc is that a CV tends to be used in a academic setting listing education/employment etc in chonological order. Whereas a Resume focuses more on your skills using examples from employement education. But at the end of the day this is more than likely to be in chonological order - so which ever one you use will look pretty similar to the other imo.

Thanks for your feedback. From your response can I assume that a CV is a brief description of what you have been doing from your schooling right upto your present career. When I applying for a job you must post your resume which should be detailing out your skills etc. But most of the time the employer or the consultant asks for a CV rather than a Resume. What do you do in such a situation.

The primary differences are the length, content and the purpose. A resume is a one or two page summary of your skills, experience and education. a goal of resume writing is to be brief and concise, since, at best, the resume reader will spend a minute or so reviewing your qualifications. whereas Cv is longer, more detailed synopsis. it includes summary of your educational and academic background as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details in US CV is used primarily when applying for international, academic, education, scientic or research positions, or when applyling for fellowships or grants. as with resume you may need different versions of CV for different type of positions

Resumes are used most frequently in the US whereas CV's are used most other places (unless a resume is specifically requested). Resumes are short and to the point, generally not more than one page but you could stretch it slightly longer, if needed, to cover relevant information. People often leave information off a resume if it is not relevant to the position for which they are applying. Resumes focus more directly on your skills and accomplishments and leave out the "life history" information that is included in a CV. The Curriculum Vitae gives an account of your entire educational/academic background, in addition to your employment history. It's a longer format than a resume and far more detailed but usually covers about two pages. A CV frequently includes hobbies, activities, publications, associations, awards, honors, etc., (whereas the resume is a more targeted document that is intended to show how you are a specific fit to the particular employer or position). As another already mentioned, in the US, CVs are most often reserved for academic, scientific, research positions, things of that nature.
