Do you own your cat or do they own you?!

I share a small half-house with my friend's cat (and him!). While I love Mo dearly, it's got me thinking about how well a cat trains us to cater for their every whim. He lets me know exactly when he wants to be let in or out, when he wants to be fed, when he wants to play, when he's annoyed... and I do it all almost without thinking! And he's managed this in a matter of months... Of course he showers me with affection too (but only when he wants to :) ) Not that I would change this in any way though.
What is the balance of power between you and your pet? Would you prefer if it were different?

Well this situation sounds familar and to be honest with you, I wouldn't trade it for anything hehe. I remember a previous discussion thread which was asking people which animal they would like to be in the next life, I chose a kitty. They are so spoiled and have nothing to worry about besides making it to the litter box, walking to their food and drink dishes, getting up on the bed, demanding endless affection from their owner and sleeping all day long...sounds like a luxurious life if you ask me lol.

Oh yeah, you're so right about that! Although I remember when I was little we used to dress up our old tomcat in doll's clothes and make little fancily-decorated beds for him out of cardboard boxes... so occasionally you'd have to put up with looking a little undignified I guess! Plus I don't think I could handle the constant stinky tuna - yuk! Thaks for posting a reply! :)

Yeah, Mo does seem to get a bit demanding at times and we don't realise that we do things for him. Sometimes I think it's like cats are telepathic and can force you subconsiously to do thing for them. Especially with the stare Mo puts on that breaks your concerntration that you have on anything else at that point in time. Glad your writing about him. Must mean that your fond of him. I know that he's fond of you.

Me too. I grew up on a large property in rural NSW and had loads of cats - around 30 at one point! But they were all loved and looked after, and since then a home just doesn't feel right without a cat in it.
