are reality shows really so real

of course reality shows are today so popular than they have ever been before, but are they really that real? this question is certainly becoming very common with tantrums thrown on the sets by agitated participants or family members when a particular participant comes out of the show. even the quarrels seem to be scripted to boost the trp's. it maybe a personalized view of mine but all the same, i would like to know what others feel.
