Why are people with glasses considered a NERD?

This is something I never understood. It always seems like people with glasses are stereotyped as being nerdy? Why? Wearing glasses doesnt mean you're a nerd it means you have bad eyes!!..and it makes children afraid of wearing glasses if they need them because they dont want to be labeled a nerd or dork just because of glasses!

I think we can thank the movie industry for this label. They always portrayed kids with glasses as being brainy nerds. Kids are very cruel when they are young, because they do not understand how they hurt other peoples feelings about something like this. My son went through the same thing and I thought it was horrible. It is the same if the kids have braces. We are a cruel society!

Yes, Ive noticed that too. In movies they will take a normally "pretty" girl and put her hair up and give her some glasses and instantly she becomes a "nerd"...then all of the sudden she gets contacts and wears her hair down and she becomes beautiful? What is that teaching kids?

The only thing I can come up with is that it is different and the kids don't know how to react. As with my sons disability, maybe there should be some little explanation. When I explain that he has problems and what all his equip. is for, and why he doesn't walk, they accept it and jus play wih him. I wonder if that would work when children are little, to make it ok. They are always so curious.
