TV control, how do you protect your children from watching unapropriate scenes?

I've just watched the news about Felico a 10 year old boy hung himself because his parents didnt buy him a christmas present. The news said that Felico was inspired by Hussein's execution. What do you think of this? How do you think we're gonna avoid the influence of such thing to our children? And as a mom/dad what have you done to protect your kids from watching bad scenes?

NO COMMERCIAL TV!!! My kids watch NO tv on school nights and have only a small tv/vr for weekend movie nights. Occassionally my older kids are allowed to watch WITH me up in my room so we can discuss immediately anything they are exposed to. This country needs to turn off their idiot boxes and spend some time with their children. You have only a few precious hours between shool/work and bedtime and whatevr you are doing (and you shouldn't be watching tv) your kids should be doing it with you! Your actions now will catch up to you later when you are old and grey and because you did not bond when you should have, no one has time for you.

I agree, very well said. It's a duty for both parents to accompany the kids when they're watching tv. You can turn the tv off or change the channel as soon as you see the unwanted scenes.

Well I apologize for the wrong spelling. I should've written "inapropriate" instead of "unapropriate" :p

My childrens tv has a block on it.Anything over PG is blacked out and they can not watch it.If I am watching something and I find inappropriate I will either change the channel or have them leave the room.It is sad the child did this after seeing what happend on tv.

Do not kid yourself.... First of all, the things that are PG are still hugely inappropriate. You cannot trust someone elses rating system to decide what is right for your kids. Second, commercials are not rated. Not only that but watch a kid channel for a little while and you will have no problem understanding why this kid hung himself. Even on the disney channel, the commercials are SO hyped and driven that they warp your kids mind into thinking that the newest coolest piece of crap is more important than ANYTHING, even life. I know its hard, habits are hard to break...but I promise you, if you keep your tv turned off til your kids are asleep each night, you will see an amazing improvement in your life.

Well maybe it's easy for us to control the movies. But news? In my country, the rating is for all ages. What about in your country?
