Do you believe in Fairies?

Ireland
January 5, 2007 4:13pm CST
Last week I watched the movie 'Fairy Tale', which is a true story about two young girls who claimed to have taken photographs of fairies at the bottom of their garden. It was a wonderful movie in its own right, really worth seeing. At the end I was (and still am) totally undecided as to whether I believe those young girls that the photos were genuine. Of course when I was growing up I believed in fairies, however now as an adult I would more describe myself as 'wanting to believe', as Agent Mulder says! I have met a few people (adults) here in Ireland who seriously believe in fairies. What do you think? Any theories or experiences?

I have that film on video, and I love it. I keep watching and watching it. It was discovered later, a lot later, when the two girls confessed, that their story was made up. It was a very clever ruse though, pulled off by two young girls in Yorkshire and I, for one, was disappointed when I heard that they had made it all up. The "fairies" were dragonflies, down by the stream, but on the film, they were cleverly depicted as cute little fairies. I believe in fairies (faeries) and goblins and such like. I also believe that they are not always as cute as people believe them to be. However, I like them and will always believe, until it can be proven that they don't exist. I believe they are little people who live in trees and undergrowth, and they don't like to be disturbed. I also believe they come out at night... never in the daytime. Hence, we don't see them, but I am convinced they are there. One experience I had... I put out food for the faeries... at the bottom of my garden, in a terracotta angel feeder. This was on a special night and the moon was full. I went down and checked very early the next morning, and the food had gone... it wasn't food that birds would have eaten... it was apple and cheese... all gone! Well, I'll leave it up to your imagination. The feeder, by the way, is fixed to the top of the fencepost, about 4-41/2 feet from the ground.

I know. I was a little upset at it not being true, but it certainly caused a big stir and awakened the world to the possibilities of other human-type life forms on this planet. Good for the Girls!!!

Thanks for your response Darkwing! I have been reading through the responses and I am so excited to see so many people who DO believe! I think my 'want to believe' beliefs are very similar to yours. I believe that, if fairies do exist, which they probably do, they are not necessarily the pretty angelic toothfairy type, but rather the different 'species' like hobbits, elves, goblins, brownies etc etc., and also not necessarily always very kindly disposed towards humans! Interesting experience you had with the feeder...! SOOO disappointing though that the movie stuff wasn't true! :(

a fairy - a fairy
i love stories about fairies even until now that i am 28. i haven't encountered a fairy ever in my life yet. but i think they are somehow real at some point. in this world we live in, everything seems to be possible. however, they might not be everywhere and only shows up to people they want to be visible to.

Yes - I also don't think they would 'show themselves' to everybody. Thanks for replying :)

No experiences (I live in the U.S., we don't have such magical creatures) but since I believe Jesus walked on water, why couldn't there be fairies? I don't think the two are mutually exclusive (at least not for me). I think it's important to keep hold of an open mind.

Thanks, I think this is an interesting topic. Just because I haven't seen any fairies, elves, gnomes, etc...doesn't mean they don't exist somewhere. I believe more than one dimension exists together here.

I guess I do to some extent. But as we grow up and become adults and live 'life', the ability to see them fades. Children are so innocent and their minds are so fresh and open to things and that's why I believe that children often see things that adults can't. One day, eventually, I will be making a fairy garden in my back yard for my daughter to attract them. Hey you might think I'm crazy, but if you don't believe, you are never going to see them.

Oh thats lovely! lucky daughter! yes I think I may do the same with mine when she's older! :) But yes I agree with you - I believe that adults filter out a lot of what they perceive that they don't think should be there.

i also believe that they aren't all good fairies. They trick us at times, they hide stuff. There are different types of fairies. Each have their own purpose, to guide or corrupt us. LOL

Yes I agree with you that they're not necessarily all good! But all interesting!! I tend to believe, like the next poster, in different 'species' like fairies, elves, gnomes, goblins, hobbits etc. And you?

well lets have a look at that statement shall we. one theory is that belief in Aliens is the modern version of belief in fairies. basically, people used to live in villages. fairies were beleived to come from unfamiliar places outside of the villages and take people away....... now Aliens.....beleived to come from unfamiliar places outside of where we live and take people away......

I believe in fairies. I think they are real. It would be nice to see one. I heard that they are mostly around prestine, greenery pastures. Like Ireland. I guess thats the reason people in Ireland believe in them. It would be nice to see them out and about. :)

As a pagan, and the mother of a daughter, I most definitely believe in faeries. I have never seen one (at least, not as an adult), but I often blame missing objects on them LOL. Plus, my innocent daughter is still young enough to see them, and she's a pretty no-nonsense child.

I would love to believe. It would be truly amazing to think that such creatures really exist. Not just faeries, but all kinds of creatures that we consider as mythical ones, only. Perhaps I need to see this 'Fairy Tale' movie of which you speak. It sounds like something that I would love ^_^ I do know that in some places in the world they still believe in faeries to the point that they will not build on land where they believe faeries to be living. I really think that this is sweet ^_^

Of course i believe in fairies.... They do exist. My girlfriend is a real fairy. I know u wont believe. But its true. She know how to spread happiness and do magic with people. She is really a fairy. And of course i believe in her. But the question is not that whether i believe in fairy but whether the fairy believes me or not?

I would love to believe in fairies. When watching the movie Finding Neverland, I did clap my hands when they said, "If you believe in fairies, clap your hands!". I will do it again if a movie asks me to o it, and I will believe the fairies that exist in movies. But when it comes to life, I prefer to keep my facts separate from fantasy! Howver, the existence of fairies can be a very good way to escape from the harsh realities of life. It can either be a comic relief or the concept of a guarian angel. But these things work out good only if you can limit it to a certain area of your mind.

I'm afraid I haven't even seen fairies myself Ashraine, but from the amount of responses I've had here from people who have seen them I really do believe in them now! 'tales' are normally based on something, aren't they...? ;) Thanks for responding! :)

like you, im still undecided whether to believe in them or not. the child in me wants to, but the more persistent adult does not. im one of those people who tries to find logic in everything, then blows everything away because of wanting to believe in things like that.

although ive never seen a fairy i do believe in them. I think they probaly are more visible to kids since kids are arent stressed and stuff. but also think of this who ever said fairies existed (the first person) actually thought up the name faires to call little magical things so they must be true on sone level
