Odd catches

i was fishing in a little creek in orlando fl about a year or so ago, and i saw a good sized fish dart into a hole. my friend and i had no idae what kind of fish it was, so we decided to catch it. it wouldn't take our bait though. so, after 4 days of trying to catch it, i decided enough was enough. i tied up 3 hooks into a treble, and set it at the opening of the hole. sure enough, he backed out of it, and i snagged him. fought as hard as any fish i have caught. turns out it was a plecostomus. an algae eater, about 18-19 inches long. never have i seen one of them before, other than the little ones in walmart's aquariums. now, that is mine. what is the oddest fish you have caught?

I went to college in Northern California and there I used to fish a creek for bass. One day I pulled out what I could have sworn to be a pirana. I took a picture of it with my camera phone and showed it to my friend. He later informed me that it was a Pacu. Not as strange as a pirana but strange nonetheless.

well, i had never heard of a pacu, but i took it upon myself to go find out what exactly they are. http://www.aquaria.info/members/d-willett/rbpacu.jpg there is a pic i found online. i don't know if yours was that big, but it gives everyone else an idea of what they look like.

Wow, now that's a Pacu. Nope, mine definately wasn'nt that big. The one I caught must have been 6 inches long if that. Thanks for the followup and hopefully someone with a 500+ rating will post that picture.

I live in Florida and know we have some strange looking fish. I'm not a big fisher but my brother was. He once caught a gar which is a long ugly fish. However the real strangest thing he caught was a blue crab, while fishing. It caught hold of his line and wouldn't let go. Finally let go when he came up onto the porch and then it went after his toes. I laughed when it happened.

while yes, a gar is a bit of an odd catch (one that i would like to make), a blue crab isn't really that strange. my father hooked into an alligator after a catfish took his bait, and it went for the catfish, and i think it was he who caught an oyster on his line.

For the life of me, I simply could Not find the pictures that we took of several alligator gars. We strung them up on a tree and took pictures of them. One of them was 7' 10". The other ones were smaller, ranging between 4 to 5 feet. I looked and looked everywhere for these pictures, but I cannot find them. Anyway, I have not seen Gars that big in a Long Time.

guys. i looked at the plescotumus --whatever-- pic you published in a website and it is weird. but that fish is called janitor fish in philippines as it eats the algae that sticks in the aquarium tank. some irresponsible aquarium keeper released a few specimens in the laguna de bay and now that fish is a pest there, in marikina river and in mindanao.we exterminate it by the ton, but hardly make a dent in its population. if someone can think of what to do with it --something like a marketable product-- he can be a millionaire in my country. he can have all the fish he wants here, and we'd probably pay him just to remove the pest from our waters. you got any ideas?

from what i am hearing, it sounds like they have moved into salt water there. well, the only thing that comes to mind right now is take them and start selling some of them to major aquariums. i am sure they need a little help keeping the glass clean. other than that, well, i don't know

A few years ago, I was fishing a tidal river here in the Northeast, and hooked a bull shark! Dude, talk about clearing the dam! The guys that were fishing with me started running for their lives... I fought the thing, even though there simply was no way that I was gonna land him... He broke off and the adrenalin super-charge that I had recieved, caused my knees to buckle and I fell to the ground! :)

dude. well, that happens. although the guys runnin for their lives are wusses. i was fishing on the jettis in tx and had a 3' - 3 1/2' shark on my line, maybe a black tip or something, and i managed to get it to within about 20 feet from shore, and it broke the surface of the water, and spit my hook out. man, i tell ya. i was so pissed off at that fish i wanted to just jump in the water after it!!!

I know this isnt odd but when my husband and I lived in new Orleans, every fall the gulf would come up into the mississippi and we would could catch lots of redfish. But onetime i caught a big flounder.Freaked me out, ugliest fish i ever saw. I was trying to flip it black offmy line till theguy next to us begged me to let him have it. never will eat flounder.

wont' eat flounder?!? man, when i was living in pensacola florida, i would go down to the beach, about a mile from where they had the old aircraft carrier docked, and go down to the mouth of this one little river next to a railroad bridge, and i would fish there. caught a good size black drum, and two flounder. wrapped them in foil, threw them on the grill, and voila. man. that was good eating. lady, you should try them sometime. they look ugly, yes, but man, they sure taste good!!

the oddest fish i ever caught was not a fish: spiny lobsters, a blue and a red one, when i was young. each took on my bait intended for red snappers, and when brought boatside,my father just made a grab for it. the blue lobster got away, though, when its antennae broke, which were what my father grabbed.it was evening and dark so he was unsure what to grab..also my line tangled with his that has a red snapper at its end...

no, i can't say i would beleive that it is a shark. i have already gotten the species of the fish, and i don't recall hearing anythign of it being a shark. if you can give me some info that will show that it is, well, then i will have been proven wrong. lol

How interesting! Did it live? Do you still have it? I would love to see a picture of it! i live in Ohio and when I was a child I fished with my Mom and Dad. We would fish in little beaver creek, yellow creek, and once in a blue moon the Ohio River. I do not know about unusual but I was real good at catching the best large mouthed bass! Daddy used to get so mad:)

When I was a teenager I was out in Pensacola Bay fishing with my Pawpaw and my Dad. After several hours of catching absolutely nothing, I hooked something large that gave me a real fight. I worked this thing for a good half hour before I finally reel in this fish that was almost 3 feet long and black with a silvery white lightening stripe along it's sides. It was called a Ling, which is a pilot or fish and generally is in the company of sharks. It's also considered good eating and was quite tasty! I was really proud of that fish.

I dont do fishing because im not outdoot type person. but i heard about my friends having weird things while fishing and sometimes they believe that's their luc of having it and the things might influenced their life in the future. and i don;t know wheather it is true or not. but i think it just a myth.

honestly i can't say anything on that. to me, fishing is a combination of skill, and luck. as for catching the oddities of the sea (or lake)that is purely luck in my opinion, and a welcome event for me. i love catching the wierd fish. it gives me something to talk about. though recently the only thing i have caught are a few catfish and bass from the pond in the backyard. not very big ones either.
