Lumps

I do regular breast checks however, Breasts are naturally 'lumpy' under the skin - how will i know if a lump is cancerous? do they feel different? harder or larger or do they protrude to the skin? ie, would you feel them by lightly smoothing the skin?I dont understand what a 'lump' is...
