why do the sun and the moon seem larger at their rising or setting than at any other time?

Please anyone correct me if my respomse is pure nonsense. I think I remember what the answee is from science class in high school many many years ago.
At sunrise and sunset you are actually seeing the sun and moon before it actually has risen and after it already set. It appears to be bigger because you are actually viewing a refracted image enhanced by the curvature of the world.
