I used to play the Ruy Lopez quite a bit but shifted to 1. d4 - I got tired of Petroffs and Philidors and Sicilians. I usually go for the queen's gambit with white, and don't mind when it is accepted, usually intereting games. With black I play the Najdorf alot against 1. e4. Against, 1. d4 the Slav is my favourite weapon.

I enjoy playing the Sicilian opening when I play black. Because of my experience in playing this opening as black, I'm fairly effective in playing against it as white. Black's first move is c9 to c7. Because this is not a "reflective" move, but is a lateral development, it forces white to really watch his development of the opening.

I played chess when I was younger but never really put any thought in gambits and such. I knew the rules and how to play but that's about it. I think it is a great game because it's like a mental laxative. When you are playing chess the outside world does not exist..your brain and fingers are channeled only toward the game and you are so absorbed in the game that you remove any and all thoughts out. Same thing with bridge and golf.
