Linux is a good stable operating system and an alternative to windows. Try freespire (www.freespire.org) or opensuse (www.opensuse.org) as your operating system. Then the most famous free alternative and much recognized software to MS Office is Openoffice. Almost all linux distros comes with this office suit. Then for internet explorer there is the most famous Firefox and opera. These browsers and many other browsers are available in most Linux OS. Autocad alternative? Well i couldn't find any good free alternative to autocad even though there are some paid softwares like varicad, linuxcad etc. This link http://www.linux.ie/newusers/alternatives.php provides you with various alternative windows software for Linux. Hope that will help you to reduce your computer cost.
