Does the type of shampoo really matter?

Ok, so I went to the salon today and got my hair cut. As usual, they were trying to sell me their hair cair products, claiming that they are by far better then any I buy at the grocery or drug store. I have a hard time believing that. The products the salons carry cost a small fortune, just one bottle of shampoo was $24!! What do you all think? Does the type of shampoo you use really matter that much? Will it really make a huge difference on your hair?
