Newborn puppies should basically be left alone with the mother for the first 3 wks or so. She fills all of their needs during this time. Puppies should be handles breifly on a regualar basis, they should be socialized to people early. Other than this, leave them to mom. After about 3 wks, she cannot keep up with keeping them clean, and you must go to work keeping their area clean. Mom will clean the puppies, you just keep the space clean. Puppies need their mother physically, also they need her to teach them things. They also need the interaction with the litter. They should not be taken from the mother and the other puppies until 8 wks.

They do not recommend seperating a puppy from it's mother till at least 8 weeks old. They should stay with the mother in a clean area that is blocked off so that they can not start wandering about once they are curious but not so blocked the mother cannot get in and out.
