I was talking with my family last night and we were curious, when you think about it, which have more people died because of: religion or smoking?
Logically think about all the numbers of people who have died throughout history for their faith or in trying to convert others to their faith, it's very sad really the amount of people killed. Just with the Christian faith we have: the Great Flood, The Plagues in Egypt, The Martyrs at the Beginning of the Christian Faith, The Crusades and Other Holy Wars, The Spanish Inquisition, Reformation, The IRA and it's war..to name some of the times deaths have occurred, and that's just with one big group not even all the subgroups that are in there or other religions.
So really which is worse for society?

I believe that religion has caused more more deaths then smoking has and i wish that nonsmokers would stop discriminating against those of us that do smoke because we are just as human as everyone else. and we have rights like everyone else too.

It is very amazing... We are one weird race of people. The really bad thing is religon could be a very beautiful and loving thing if only we'd let it.

Thanks :) Just amazed at how people will jump on one problem but ignore other things that have done far more damage.

A smoker has never looked me in the face and told me I was going to suffer eternal damnation because I don't smoke. I have, however, dealt with incredible amounts of scorn because I have dared to raise my eyebrow in skepticism at a book that has been tainted by more sets of hands than Pamela Anderson. Religious groups are the real terrorists. And if you take a careful look--The KKK, the Taliban--religious fanaticists. When was the last time Joe Camel was accused of being a terrorist?
I don't smoke, but I'll take smokers any day. Especially if they have coffee...

Heheh oh that one was good and I couldn't agree with you more. Smokers could care less if anyone else smokes. They like staying in their own little world and leaving others to do what they want.

Why, oh why, must I be the first to answer this?
As a smoker I am made to feel guilty on a daily basis about all of the people that I am personally responsible for either killing or making deathly ill.
I have not ever contemplated comparing the two, as you have done in your question; but I have often wondered about the loss of life in the name of "religion".
So many of us question the "rights" of religious sects to seek medical attention for their children. So many of us question the "rights" of religious sects that say it is alright to have more than one wife. So many of us question the "rights" of religious sects that say it is okay to be gay. So many of us, especially in America, question the "rights" of sects that don't call their God, "God". And on and on we go questioning the "rights" of people who think/believe differently than we do.
I am not going to say that I personally agree with what every sect, religion, belief system, etc. preaches. That would be crazy-talking! How could one believe it all? I am going to say that I RESPECT the rights that each affiliation has and am not willing to draw arms against anyone just because they don't happen to believe what I believe.
The examples I gave are ones that most of those reading this find extreme; and that is why I gave them. Since time began, (I assume, but I know not since if I was there then, I do not remember) there has been warring in the name of religion.
What a shame.

You aren't the first there were a few others who answered :)
Oh I have many who try to make me feel guilty over it but I don't buy into it. I don't agree with what they do is all. We should respect each others choices not only about religion but about their lives. It's as simple as that.
I agree religion has cost many lives over the years. The numbers would be shocking if anyone added them all up and I'm sure would be far more then any numbers from smoking, drunk driving, and all the bad things people complain about today. Religion still causes deaths but it's not being banned although other things are. I just wanted to point that out to people. They think so horribly of many things but they don't want to realize that other things can be just as deadly.

Its no doubt the religion which has taken the number of lifes. Its not just in the past by one religion, but also now in this present and wonderful world. Killing the human kind just for the sake of religion as now become a fashion for some people who just live for that reason. All this religions are formed by us and its time for thid religion is kill us. I think its more dangerous than smoking.

Worse is the Religion and what makes me mad is that as far as I know Religion is not suppose to kill they go on about God and Jesus and I do not believe that God and Jesus wanted them to kill each other it is so stupid
You have the genuine People that are religious who believe in God and then you have these ones that use Religion as an Excuse for War

yup I agree with you religion has caused more deaths than smoking .
thru the ages and religion wars will keep on killing people more than smoking for the wars just keep on going. I could smoke ina room full of people and not kill any of them but thay think so from all the medical finding so they say I dont believe in all that chit .

Definitely religion. If you follow any religion then it means you are part of a group, different groups have different opinions and ideas which means divisions. For some followers these divisions can lead to war. Most religious followers can accept other groups but for some its their way or none at all. Religion has been the cause of most deaths in the world.

To kill in the name of God. That's what's worse. God is love Joy and Peace. Love is agreeing with someone to keep peace and not about opinions. Peoples opinions dont mean anything. They start from our parents. It's the conditioned mind that believes in right and wrong, good and bad. Who told you what is right or wrong? People. I say question everything.

I agree with you. Religion has caused more wars and more deaths over the years than anything else. I am not refuting that smoking is bad for you (even though I admit to being a smoker myself) but there is really no comparison in the numbers involved.

according to me both religion and smoking had caused more deaths but there is so much difference in them ,while smoking people know the end result of it then also they continue to smoke, they get habituated but in religion so many people are provoked to take drastic steps in the name of god or whatever they say according to their religion

Of course Religion is what is causing more deaths but think of this... everyone knows this fact but still the power of religion is not diminishing people are becoming more and more fanatic about religion. So why is it so? that people are still ready to die for their faith? Must be something that keeps them going............. hmmmmm

Organised religion has always had its hidden motives. To sustain power over the masses, the can go to any extreme, as you have rightly observed in the crusades, inquisition and IRA instances. Yes, it has become a necessary evil and the reason behind mass murders. I am an agnost, but I have some hope on the space for personal faith.

what a great discussion topic , of course religion (or more rightly men using religion to excuse their beastial behaivour) has caused more deaths than smoking. Yet i also want to know how many 000,000,000s of deaths have been caused by car driving, thats got to run it a close second

Probably smoking and other unhealthy life style. Eg. the cancerous stick doesn't only risking a smoker's health but also putting the second hand smokers at risk as well. Whereas, the killings in wars are short term compared to the never ending of smoking habits which involve the residents of the Earth..

And the Inquisition didn't involve the residents of Earth? How about World War II and the millions it killed due to their religion.

thanx 4 this nice discussion but i am confuse what do u want to prove this discussion will not lead u any where coz i think that religion is more important there is only one result of smokin thats negative impact on the health so pl do not discuss things that u can not compare

Not trying to prove anything, just trying to point out that smoking is not the end all evils that many try to make it to be. Right now many are trying to say smoking is the bane of the whole world and I was trying to point out that smoking isn't all that bad when you consider what else can kill in this world.
