Spending New Year's Eve alone: Does it mean you are undergoing a crisis?

I learned yesterday that a friend of mine spent New Year's Eve alone. He's married with three children, and apparently nothing is wrong in his life. He told me some time ago that he has a lover. He's always been very optimistic, but I've noticed that he's been working more than 14 hours a day. Can this necessity of being alone on such a special day mean that he's undergoing a crisis? How can I help him if so?
