Coloring for Relaxation and for Fun with the Kids

Grab a crayon and join your kids or grandkids when they are coloring in their favorite color books. Better yet, buy a few for yourself. Coloring is a great way to relax. When my kids were little we would bring out the coloring books and crayons and sit for hours bringing color the pictures. Each of us had a book that we would color from and once we finished a picture, we would trade books. It was an enjoyable time for all of us.

I love the Dover coloring books, even as an adult. Some of them have really gorgeous pictures in them. My daughter has a couple that show period costumes from Japan and China, and they're amazingly detailed for coloring books.

Depending on my mood and what medium my grandchildren have chosen I use crayons or colored pencils.

Oh yes there are many more adult coloring books, or should I say advanced. They have alot of detail sometimes. I have one with fairies, and one with puzzle type pictues and all kinds of them. I don't color with crayons though. I like colored pencils. I have over 100 of them. I also like to draw my own pictures so I keep a sketch pad with my coloring books and pencils. I have to be in the mood though. I don't color on a regular basis...maybe I should.

Colouring is great fun and when my children were younger would love to sit and colour in with them. Such an effort to keep in those lines though but the joy of using different colours and being creative with colour made it quite interesting and it must be good learning for children also.

My kids would point out to me when I went out of the lines! Very observant.

That does sound fun, but I always prefered to start with a plain white piece of paper, and make my own creations. Colouring inside the lines never really appealed to me. Also, with my poor eyesight, lines would often confuse me. I do pretty good drawings with just a black pen. No colour, but a lot of detail. Just the act of creating something on paper can be relaxing.

Oh! One of my greatest joys at Christmas was to get a brand-new "big box" of Crayola crayons! I was so excited to use them but, then, I didn't want to because they looked so nice there, all lined up with their sharpened tips! I was a conflicted child LOL ;)

I didn't want to share my crayons with my brothers. They would always break the tip of them. I want them to be sharp at all times.

You are so right! My girls, don't like to color so much but it can be fun! Maybe after dinner. My oldest is doing her subtraction book. They would rather do books about school then color. I can't get them to color, I don't know why...abnormal I guess... I am going to try when becca is alone...I think it is because her big sister is doing subtraction, and she wants to do some work...*LOL* What a great idea you have! Thanks!

I like to color with kids. It's fun to watch how they do it. They have such great imagination, and what they see is often quite different from what I see. A person with purple hair? Why not! A green striped cat? Sure! I love all the new colors and names that Crayola has. It's a fun way to teach words to very young children too.

That is so true. I used to color along with my daughter when she was small. We would open one of her coloring books and she would color a picture on one side of the page and I would color the one on the other side. It was very relaxing and she enjoyed creating something with Mommy.

crayon - crayon
Oh, you have brought back great memories for me yet again with another thoughtful post! It has been so long since I have sat down and colored in a picture. Even my own artwork, when I have created any, tends to be just in pencil and not colored in. I did try to learn how to do coloring effects on the computer a few years ago, though, but it is much much harder than picking up a crayon!^_^ Aw, I am thinking back to my many coloring books now.. so many based on cartoon series that I loved. I used to look at those coloring books to draw the characters from them, as well!^_^

Very nice! When I draw I can relax and have fun.I believe that this is the mystery of their world, they can jave all that they want when they drew.Maybe sometimes we must to play,to draw with they,to feel children again.I've tryed that and I was great and my week of work was more relaxing after that.I wish you luck and have a nice day!

I like this one about colouring in with my grandkids, I believe that it is very important to spend some special time with my grandchildren, in anything they like to do and it would be great to colour in with my grandchildren especially when it is wet and they cannot go outside to play. So thank you for your useful discussion.

I couldn't agree with ya' more on that. As far as I can remember I would always color with my nieces. I did read that coloring was a great relaxation technique a few years ago but the funny thing is that I had already been doing it without realizing there was some psychological aspect to it, such as relaxation. I loved coloring with my nieces when they were very young, it was fun and very enjoyable. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
