I had noticed the my cat Growler ( because when he plays with his toy mouse he goes gggrrrrr at you ) would always set at look at the tabel a long time before he jumped. And when he would drink water from his cat dish he would put his paw in it befor he would drink. Well it wasn't anything to call the vet over but since we were there anyway for their check up I couldn't help myselv I had to ask if he might be blind on one eye because I had figured at that he could see somethings.
The vet looked at me like she didn't really belive me but startet looking at what he was doing. She did admit that he did have a problem buthe wasn't blind. And it was nothing to be alarmed about. All I had to do was buy glasses for him.
Me ofcourse "you can't get glasses for a cat"
Vet "no you can't but he is nearsighted"
Thankfully she didn't charge anything for the cats eye tests;-)

I'm guessing, and I don't know how old the cat is, but there are some forms of eye irritation that cats get that aren't serious, but do affect how they behave for a while. Cats can get discharge in the eyes, a bit like mild conjunctivitis, sometimes very noticeable. The mild form blurs vision, like when you get that clear gunk in your eyes. For a cat, whose natural eyesight is excellent, it could be pretty stressful. If the cat seems otherwise happy and healthy, it's probably not too serious.(Actually, I think if there was anything really wrong, Growler would be making sure you knew about it. Cats have more sense than people, usually.)
I also know at least one cat who had concussion, and was having difficulty navigating for a while. Apparently sometimes they don't land on their feet.
I'd suggest staying alert about how the cat's dealing with things, and maybe a second opinion if necessary, so you've got more info if required.

You had me going for a minute there till I read it all the way through. Your cat sounds a lot like one of mine. Touches the water, looks at things carefully before jumping etc. We thought he might be near sighted but then he'll spot a lizard in the distance and try to go after it. So I'm not sure what it is. However in this day and age of them coming up with gadgest and things for animals I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't come out with glasses for cats.

Poor cat! I am very nearsighted myself and there's just no way I would be able to function without glasses. If your cat's sight is as bad as mine no wonder he takes his time about things. Somebody should really offer laser surgery for myopic cats. It would really improve their quality of life though probably not the life expectancy of the local birds!

You are lucky, our vet tests for every little thing and it's getting excessive. Of course they send reminders to bring him in so they can rip us off.

This is serious LOL. Well I guess you need to try it and see how it looks like to have a cat wear eyeglasses. It won't be a funny sight my goodness. Please get one for you cant and tell us your experience.

oh that is really a wonderful thought to put glasses for your cat but i think it is not quite possible first of all you must train your cat for not breaking the glasses

Oh the poor cat, yes you would think that the cat could be blind in one eye, as he could see somethings, but that sounds funny to have to buy glasses for a cat, and thankfully the vet did not charged you anything as I know the vet can be very expensive.

A couple of my cats put their foot in the water before they drink. It was because as kittens they could see exactly where the water was and would stick their noses in it. Now they touch the water to make waves so they can see exactly where it is.

that is a really cute story, had me thinking too that there really was classes for cats, but maybe contacts you know the kind they put behind the iris, maybe that would be a option if something was really wrong!!!
hope your kitty is okay, eye sight might do better as it gets older or how old is the kitty?

My cat is 15 years old. He is also near-sighted. He will not drink water out of a bowl, he never has. He wants it from the faucet. He does the same things though. He will look at the top of the barstool for a long time before he will jump up there. On occasion, he wont make it. If he doesn't, he wont try again either. The only time he wants up there is to get a drink. So you have to go pick him up and put him on the sink so that he can get a drink.
I think he might be getting a bit senile too. It seems like sometimes he forgets what he's doing. He has what I call "empty-bowl syndrome" too. He gets upset if his food bowl gets empty. it does not matter if he is hungry or not. he wants food in his bowl He will also leave a bite or two just so his bowl wont be "empty" but bug the crap out of you because he can see the bottom of his bowl..
He's quite humerous, to be as old as he is. :)

Relly sorry to say that I just couldn't imagine a cat wearing specs. Might I suggest giving your cat contact lenses since cat is quite active to allow its glasses to stay in place

Aw, a cat in glasses would be so cute!*laugh* I'm sorry about your cat's nearsightedness:/ I have that myself and have to wear glasses. Of course, I'm not a cat*grin* But anyway, I hope that something can be done to help your kitty see better^_^
